u need mechanics tools, big torque like screw thing rite in the middle under the airbag, dont think the full steering wheel has to be removed to fit new airbag but unsure

as kriso says,

the airbag is clipped in..
Ive still got my cupra wheel to put on and the guy said he just used a plain screwdriver and stuck it up the rear lol

but he says if u take a knife to make a wee slit in the back says comes out easier.

Im just letting a garage or accident repair centre do mines

Would this be the same for a 2002 Leon MK1, i cant seem to remove the steering wheel. There is also a button beside the rear window heater called "airbag off" but it dont seem to do anything when pressed. (it dont seem to press in at all actually) Does the airbag have to be turned off to remove the steering wheel?

the "airbag off" is not a button - it's a warning light.
It should light up when you turn on the ignition for a few seconds. The airbag switch for passenger airbag is in your glovebox - use your key to turn it off. (It's in case you have a child seat on the front seat)

You cannot turn off the drivers airbag.

Oh, i see, i acidentally pushed that waring light in a bit and its kinda stuck, but i think ill leave it alone from now on. Any advice on removing the steering wheel? I think what i meant to ask is, is it possible to acidentally activate the drivers airbag when removing the steering wheel?

I can't really help there i'm afraid, but I know I don't like messing with airbags - they contain explosives and even a vag-com scan of their control modules *could* set them off....

Have a bit of a search on here, as I'm sure people have done it before.

Yeah, i been looking, ill keep searching. I know very little bout fixing cars to be honest, but I been cheaping out on the work, goin to local garageman instead of seat dealer, and he changed the 2 front track rod ends (or something like that) and he set the steering wheel about 30 deg of centre. He tried to rectify it, but he says only thing left to try if just remove steering wheel and restet it, but he couldn even do that!!!

trick behind removing the airbag is to have a small mirror, place it where the dials are and with a long flat-head screwdriver locate the clips (you will need to turn the steering wheel 90o either side to give access to the holes)

you don't need to unclip the battery but make sure all electrics are off, no ignition! the clips need to be pushed sideways and are sometimes forcefull. you will then need to unclip the airbag module and undo the nut in the middle of the steering wheel.

if you're just replacing the airbag you won't need to do that

P.S. try and get some light round the back too ;)
