lol i have actually done that with two of my old cars... only in a much more paint / wing friendly manner.

wot i do is use the standard vw jack winding the jack up and down gradually moving the 1.5" piece of piece of round wood(baseball bat style only about 6" long) along the arch pushing the lip up slightly... this means that any contact will just rubb and not rip the wee lip down (when happed me to start with ffs)..

leon / toledos wont have this problem as the lip already is pushed up..

Hmm, i think i'll give that one a miss. But to extend the conversation on this, i have been checking about regarding rolling the arches and there is information widely available on the subject so it leaves me with two options.

(The Wheel are definetly rubbing on the arch lip.)

Option 1: Buy new tyres with a 215/35/19 profile and stretch them on.

Pros: i can gain a few mm and bring the wheel under the arch.
Pros: It will help achieve the vee dub/euro look i will inevitabliy be looking for.

Con: i have just spend, £700 on tyres, £250 on Spraying them and the alloys cost, well i won't even mention how much for genuine BBS, i cannot justify replacing the tyres as they are pratically new and the silly season and all it gloriuos costs is nearly upon us.

Option 2: Roll the front arches.

Pros: There is a lip of about 2cm that can be rolled back allowing the wheel to fit in under the arch.
Pros: Its cheaper
Pros: Its cheaper
Pros: I can drop the ride height more.
Pros: There are plenty of local lads on vagdrivers.net that i am sure would be willling to help me do this.

Con: If done incorrectly there is a chance of cracking the paint work!


So as above option 2 would be a clear winner for me, i can always get new stretched tyres in the future when my current ones wear out.

Option 3: Raise the suspension a tad :)

Stretched tyres are dangerous, don't do it, have a search for the threads about this.

You'll have to over inflate them to get them to stay on so the ride will be much more harsh, you run a greater risk of damaging the rim on pot holes, kerbs and from general road debris and the tyre can actually come off the bead, usually on impact from pot holes etc. It'll probably make your car understeer quite a bit too if you're widening the track at the rear also.

A bit of stretch is nice imo but some of the dub boys are stupid tbh...

A lot of people on here are after performance from their car... a stretched tyre will not help in this respect at all!

What I mean is there won't be any stretch and by reading the post I think he wants a bit of stretch?

The profile of a 215/40 will be slightly thiner than a 225/40 as well so definatly not helping the pot hole situation.

As said my aim is to roll the arch's, in the future i will be putting a small stretch on the tyres, nothing too extreme, but just a hint, i have 235/35/19 at the moment, i will go to a 215 or 225 /35/19, thats not extreme, the wheel are 8.5j BTW.

I am not after being 'scene' or anything but after a slight stretched look. I am happy with the way that my 225 rubber looks on the car but it's quite flat to the rim. The down side is that i'm reducing the amount of rubber on the road, not by much mind.

Sorry to resurrect this again, but i have been thinking about it and what are people thoughts on running 2 different tyre profiles, i.e front = 215/35/19, back (current tyre) = 235/35/19.

this would mean i would only have to fork out for 2 new tyres(front) and i can also reuse the old front tyres on the back, so i would be getting the use out of the full set and not wasting cash.

Would this looks naff and or is it a no no when it comes to tyres?
Would a stretch on the front and not the back be wierd looking
Anyone else running this setup.?
