Noobie - First Ibiza

Hi all

My partner is buying her stepfathers 1997 R Reg Seat Ibiza, as far as I know it is a 1.6 gti. I've been trying to find some details but cant find much on the 1.6 model. I'm assuming its the 1.6Gti as it has a GTI badge on the front grille(no 16v badge though), on the back it just has Seat Ibiza.

Can somebody give me some details on the car, links etc.

Think we are getting it for a good price, £500. Its mileage is quite high, 103500 but he has had services every year and new exhaust less than 2 years ago. Runs well from when I've been a passenger.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you sure it's a 1.6? I have never heard of a 1.6gti, only the 1.8 and 2.0.

I prepare to stand corrected though

is it 3 or 5 door? I've got the 100Bhp 1.6 SXE but as far as i'm aware they only did that in the 5 door.

Take a pic of the engine bay and post it up and we'll let you know what it is :D

Flapper can probably do it from the chassis number too...

no 1.6 gti mate, sorry

a 1.8 gti would have 16v on the front grill.

It sounds like someone has put a gti grill on a 1.6 or 1.4 mate.

Thanks for the replies folks.

Found out tonight that it is a 1998 R Reg(not 97 as i thought) 2.0L 8v Gti.

From looking at Auto trader, seems we are getting a fairly good deal. He was offered £500 from the garage where he is buying a new car but said we could have it for that price. Comes with a set of sport alloys that he bought a couple of years ago as well as the original alloys.

great car.

never going to win any awards for being fastest but a great reliable motore with bags of torque. Dont worry about the Miles. My 8v gti is just coming up to 108k and starts and runs on the button everyday.

Got the car on Saturday and happy bar one niggle, when my partner is driving(I dont drive), the clutch is creaking both when pressing and releasing the clutch pedal. Feels a bit heavy as well, no gear change problems though.

I've done a search here and a little confused as to wether this is the clutch cable or pedal box or both. Not going to try any kind of repairs ourselves as we are hopeless at that kind of thing!

Just after a bit of advice and how much people think this may cost before we start getting quotes from garages.

Will post piccies of the car when the rain stops here in wet Devon.

first of all nice car, i have the same and have to agree with all above comments, before shelling out money have u tried wd40 on the clutch cable, maybe im wrong but these cars are known for heavy clutches due to the fact its a cable clutch, maybe wd40 will ease it up? and with the creaking let your partner press the clutch whilst you look under the bonnet, you should be able to locate the clutch cable (for the wd40) and also a possibility as to where the noise is coming from, so you can be more specific and find out from people on here what the problem is, if there is one....

with no gear change issues then it's probably just a dried up cable as the box going will cause trouble to get in gear dues to the cable not pulling fully

they are a little stiff by the design sadly (6ft long) but as above a good squirt won't do any harm or if you wanna push the boat out ideally a new cable is best bet

duck oil works/lasts better than wd40 and if you can soak it right in with the cable off properly both new/old will be a breeze to use

If the pedal box is ok then it will be a dry cable I think. I replaced my pedal box back in August (did it myself) and I have abit of a creaking still and its the cable. Not a new one ready go on at some point.

And regards to price for replacing the pedal box I was quoted 360 quid to get it done. Hence why I did it myself.

i think i'll be doing mine soon, squeaking & heavy, just putting it off as i don't fancy trying to hold a duck & squeeze it at such a small target:cartman:
