Help Needed / my engine is broken

Hi all

While driving home from work earlier i heard a loud popping noise followed my a huge amount of smoke from the back pipe and a complete power loss

I managed to get the car home but even using the slightest of throttle there is a continious whining sound . Even when i rev the car at idle the noise is still there.

This is my first diesel and turbocharged car so any info will be greatly appreciated

I forgot to mention in my post that i actually called out the AA and the mechanic checked (as you stated ) the turbo pipes.

He said that the pipes were a common problem on these engines and normally go at around 50k or don't go at all . On mine however they seem fine.

He did mention that the problem could be some valve that could be sticking open ( i can't remember the name ) but this needs to be checked at a garage ,

Personally, I think if you take a look in the drivers side wheel arch, remove the liner so you can see the intercooler, you'll find a turbo hose blown off.

EGR valve sticking open, but that would give you limp mode, not clouds of white smoke, power loss and whining. Your symptoms sound to me like a broken or (more likely) popped off pipe between the turbocharger and the engine inlet.

I watched the AA man take off the wheel arch liner , but he said that the pipes all seem connected

Some AA men are not the most informed, let a decent garage check it for you. Does the car still start and run?

The car does run but there is no power , and when you give it the slightest throttle you get that damm whining noise

I'm probably going to get the car towed to my local independent VW specialist to have it checked ,

The only smoke i can remember is when it first happened , and the popping noise / complete power loss occured.

If you start up the car and rev it then it should smoke heavily if the turbo intake system has a pipe off - this is because the ecu cannot correctly determine the air/fuel ratio and ends up dumping loads of fuel in, the smoke is unburned fuel.
If its white smoke then the turbo shaft could have broken and be leaking oil into the inlet - this would mean that only one side could possibly spin or air can still pass through but has to flow through the damaged vanes - thus creating your whirling noise but no power.
