Coilpacks and MAFs are the main ones that commonly give up on the MK3s (both sub £100 fixes), but anything electrical can pose an issue. Mechanically these engines are fairly sound.

Many people will complain of x y and z on here but I've found mine to be very reliable in my two years of ownership and no plans to shift it yet :)

Get your dad too do his homework on here and find out how good the 1.8 20vt engines are
Every car as its problems and if you ask me maf's coil packs n75 valves maybe a common thing which imo its not too bad.

Any performance car will have issues but you know it makes sense and happy motoring if you do buy one :D

Always had VW's up until about 10 years ago, did'nt like the then current Golf GTI so bought a Mk2 16V Cupra in Jan 2000, 2 years later after liking the Mk2 I bought a Mk3 1.8t. Still have them both today, not had any major problems with any of them. Now on my 2nd MAF & 2nd coil pack, not bad for a 'very unreliable car'. As with any car, do your homework & look for a decent one.

I owned a Golf GTI... Broke down about 8 times in the same year... rotted underneath, engine was unreliable (2.0 NA) and everything you could imagine went wrong. So far, SEAT hasn't been too bad. Any car will have issues even Toyotas and Jap cars, just got to pick a good well looked after one.
