I recently bought a 05 1.4 ibiza. So far so good but the car only came with one key. The other key snapped of in the drivers door lock. I have two fobs but only the single key.

I rang up WJ King and asked for a quote on a new key... £101!.

I've looked on ebay and can get a blank key for Around £20-30. I went down to the local locksmiths they said if i present them with a blank they will cut it for a tenner. How do i programme a new key in though. Is it easy? or should i not bother and just buy the proper key?

Any help is appreciated.

The ebay route is the way to go, programming is easy to do.
There is a small glass chip inside your current key, this authenticates the key to the immobiliser - without it the car won't start even if the key is cut correctly and it opens the doors remotely.

The procedure for pairing the key with the car is like so...

Try this:

- car is locked
- unlock with normal key manually at drivers door lock
- IGN ON with normal key ... leave it there
- use NEW remote key to lock the car manually at drivers door lock
- remove remote key from door lock
- press "lock" at the NEW key, indicator lights will flash
- then hold the "unlock" for ~3 sec. and indicators will flash long and the doors should unlock
- coding procedure should be successfully finished.

Here is 65 pages of advice on how to make a flip key, I know it's a lot of reading but it'll get you there in the end!

Oh B*llocks

Looks like this is about to get a lot more expensive.

The key that broke off in the drivers door lock is stuck there. Im guessing this means that it will be impossible to programme a new key in. So even if i buy a new key get it cut etc. I can't programme it because i cant use the drivers door lock. :(

Any ideas... or should i just go to seat and fork over the money :|

P.s. Cheers kidinspace for the advice.

Erm... that guide says drivers door... Never heard of anyone saying that it doesn't work in the other door... come to think of it I couldn't even tell you if my passenger door has a keyhole in it. I don't see why there would be any difference between the doors as far as programming keys is concerned.

my passenger door doesn't have a keyhole... (Something i had to consider when buying the car, would i be able to climb in through the boot?, i decided i would for the price he was selling at) I don't think it would work with the lock on the boot though?

It doesn't matter if the key doesn't match the car as far as remote locking is concerned, if the blade is cut the same as the original then it should open the boot.

I reckon £101 must include coding - the remote key itself can be ordered complete with fob, cut to your car, for £67 inc vat ;)

Kirkcaldy!!
would you need to get it re-coded, surely replaceing the blade would be enough as the chip(transponder) thing inside the fob would still be matched with the car ? ?

just a thought?

so

I was thinking the same thing initially, but that would only work neatly if the broken blade is from a folding key - are you suggesting that the broken "key" and the new key are to be both fitted to a key ring so that only the blade gets cut and the fob and transponder from the original key are still used? I did not go much with the earlier (kidinspace) method of cloning the new key's transponder, I think that someone got confused with adding in a new key to the rolling code of the central locking system!

I'd also guess that it would be fairly easy to release the driver's door lock barrel, ease off the dust cover and pull the broken blade out, or if you want to do the job properly (and just in case the barrel was seized), order up a new lock barrel using the tag supplied with the car, or can VAG generate a lock number from the "shape" of the good key?

The chip is bonded to the blade half of the key and is solely for the immobiliser - the remote fob part needs coded separately to operate the central locking.
SEAT dont supply blades on their own, they only come already attached to the blade half of the key.
Also, blanks cannot be ordered, all come precut based on the car they are ordered to - as 'security parts' the supply system is VERY strictly controlled.
