Wheel refurb Part 1
Started the refurb of my Leon "Starfish" alloys today. (Had them taken off the car yesterday and set about cleaning them off last night.) The wheels ware in excellent condition so there shouldn't be any filling required.
Steps taken:
1. Removed all weights and valves from the rims.
2. Cleaned old rubbber from the edges of the wheel (where the tyres grip the rim, or the bead I think its called.) with a wire brush.
3. Sanded down the inside of the rim with 80 grit paper.
4. Filled some curb marks out with a metal file.
5. Sanded down outside of the wheel with coarse paper
6. Sanded the outside of the wheel with fine paper.
7. Used some industrial wipes to clean off all dust and dirt from wheels.
Have done all four wheels, took me about 4 hours in total.
Paint hasn't arrived in the post yet! Might slap on one coat of filler primer today and let that dry overnight though.
Will have another go with some fine grit paper between each primer layer too, so that they look as best as possible (for a home refurb anyway!)

Looks like a good start Mike, I bet your hands are hurting now!
Are you going to get the wheels baked after you finish painting? The only reason I ask is that if you don't leave the paint enough time to cure, when the tyre is refitted it'll pull the paint off the edge of the rim. I left mine in a hot room for about a week before I had my tyres fitted.

Cheers! Not done this before but I'm glad the sanding went well. I'm not expecting an amzing finish because I am doing it myself in my garage etc. but all good so far. Got to try hard not be muck up the primer next and then the paint!
All you need to remember is to only put a dust coat of primer on. Same with the paint. The first coat just needs to be a very light dust coat, just to cover it. Don't try to wack it all on in one go. Dust coat, let it dry, then another thicker coat and so on until it's built up properly. Etch primer would probably be best for the wheels as this eats into the metal. Stinks like f00k mind but its good stuff.
As long as you've prepped it well, you should be ok. Scotch it off with a red scotch brite, then degrease it (or panel wipe it) before painting to remove any dust etc etc blah blah.

Cracked on with it today. Paint hasn't arrived yet but got some primer so thought I would get stage 2 done...
Step 8: Cleaned the inside of the wheels with industrial wipes
Step 9: One coat of primer to the inside of wheel, inside of spokes and rim edge
Step 10: Cleaned centre caps while I was waiting for the primer to dry. Not sure what to do with these? Can't remove the centre badge...
Step 11: Very light coat of primer to the face of the wheel
Step 12: Another light coat
Step 13: Rub down with fine grit sand paper
Step 13: Another 2 coats of primer
Step 14: Final rub down with very fine paper. Gets the wheels really smooth!
Step 15: Leaving to properly dry overnight. Ready to paint!

Yeah, really pleased with them so far! Just have colour to go now but still waiting for the spray cans to arrive in the post.

I'm amazed how good the wheels have turned out from a few coats of primer and a bit of a rub-down!
