Potential Leon owner :)

Hello all, I've decided to make my introduction and enquiry into one thread as i am yet to purchase a leon and have came in hope of some friendly advice.

I recently had my first nipper and the 57plate Fiesta i've been running for the last 2 years has to go to make way for a 5door. I've been looking at my options for a while and settled between an Accord typer and the Leon Cupra (around a 2003 model) After going out in my mates S3 the other night i decided i need some boost back in my life and am going to go for the Leon, either the 180 or 210 in January.

Firstly, what are the main differences between the 180Cupra and the 210CupraR apart from the power? And i am right in thinking that they are both 5 door with the 225 3door being the exception? I've seen a fair few 180 versions come up on autotrader that i have taken a shining too that are well within my price range with a bit of cash left over to play with.

Ideally, I'd like 200+bhp which surely is possible with mapping, induction and exhaust?
I also like to have nice seats so im hoping the CupraR interior will switch across to the Cupra with minimal fuss? CupraR wheels would be a must also.

I had so many questions in my head earlier that i wanted to ask and now im here im stuck scratching my chin lol I'll fire off more as they come to me if thats cool.

Cheers in advance for any wise words

Regards, Mark

going back to basics
Firstly, hello and welcome,

Secondly, let's talk cars, right, all mk1 Leons are 5 Dr the 225 Cupra r is the same as the 210, I think 225 was from 53 plate onwards, forget the accord (we would say that) as if you want power you'll be sat above 6000 rpm all day doing 4 mpg unlike a Cupra (180)/Cupra r (210/225) because of the fairly small turbo power is almost instant. Cupra/cupra r differences are Cupra has ko3s turbo and smaller injectors, I think, as opposed to a ko4 in the r, I think to get r power in a Cupra, circa £2k is needed but if you started with the r, that money would get you around 260-270bhp (someone feel free to correct me on this) this is just a small amount of info as my pc is packed ready for moving and I'm currently using my phone so someone else will give you a more detailed explanation

BTW don't be afraid of reliability, I'm on 145k and running sweet

Hello mate and thanks for the advice. If i went for the 180 i wouldn't want to go mad on performance mods. I'd be happy with anywhere between 200-220 which surely even a good map would get me with maybe another couple of mods? What about induction? Are cone filters more effective than performance panels with the 1.8t?

It's worth me considering just going for the 210 if i can find a good one within my budget. I have until around new year so i can keep an eye out on what theyre going for and consider it at the time.

Thanks again for the advice, has helped me in my quest for knowledge :)

In my honest opinion with you having a nipper etc id get a 150 TDi. Revo or Jabba map can see 195bhp and just under 300 pound of torque! On top of that get a Milltek diesel exhaust and you'll be looking at around 205/210bhp and a hell of a lot of torque plus the 40mpg you want ;)

I have considered a diesel mate but i just love petrol engines too much! Especially turbo'd ones :D Another thing that swayed me to the Cupra was the fact i can get 35-40mpg when i'm driving like Mr Magoo with my lad in the back, then when i'm in the car on my own (which i am a fair bit for work) i can have a bit of power to get me around.

Each to there own :) Ive always been a petrolhead as well but needed economy :( Love the fact i have that much torque on tap though :p. Im in need of a Milltek and a decent panel filter and i should be around the same as a 210 then but quicker . Where you from?

From Northants but work in Herts mate, Where in Yorks are you? I was working up in N.Yorks for a while.

I know what you mean about torque from dervs. I know a lad with a FabiaVrs that has silly amounts of torque and he still has plans to tune it more up near 200hp  I have had a good long think about a diesel because the modern ones are fantastic but i won't be swayed (just yet) lol

imho (coming from a cupra owner) there are only 2 reasons i would have a cupra now instead of a cupra r. and thats if i couldnt afford a cupra r. and for the leather interior and the functions associated with the leather interior!

the cupra r is almost perfect styling wise! there isnt a body kit on the market that can improve on its looks imo. and in the long run its cheaper to get the higher power figures from than a cupra
