New ARB's - Now the ABS/TCS Goes mental!!!

Hi All,

I've recently had a Neuspeed rear 28mm ARB fitted anf a KW 25mm front ARB fitted.

Since then i've had the ABS kicking in (not all 4 at once) when accelerating around a sweeping bend!!! The car feels planted and not twitchy but you sh1t your pants when the ABS cuts in. Normally one or two wheels.

Has anybody else had this? I'm sure its not right as it feels very un natural.

I was wondering if it could be the steering wheel position sensor faulty, tricking the ABS/TCS system into thinking my steering wheel is rotated further than it actually is.

I've had a similar thing on my car before where the ABS erratically activated the front wheel ABS system, and it ended up being the same sensor.

Hi Bill,

I'm going to have a look tomorrow.

I'll post any up that are on there.

The weird thing is it does it when your not expecting it. I.e. if you giving it some beans around a corner the ESP light flashes but only backs the power off a bit, it only seems to do activate the ABS on slow sweeping bends!!!

I needed 4 new tyres but could only afford 2 so i put some new ones on the back
Going round any sharpish or even sweeping bend even at slow speed would cause it to cut in and judder
Now i have new tyres on the front and it doesnt happen
I also had someone put vagcom on it but showed no faults

Hi Mate,

I too checked the vag-com but the car showed no faults. I've reset the steering wheel position sensor to ensure that the car knows where zero degree's is for straight ahead direction.
My tyres are alll in near perfect condition (GY Eagle Assym's all round).

I'm wondering if 25mm arb's are too big for the front and its this that causing the problem, I do have an adjustable neuspeed arb on the back so i might try softening it up too see if it helps.

The thing is doing a search it seems to be only me and you that have had this problem!

Weitec Hicon GT Coilovers going on this week so I hope they don't make it worse!!!

Quite funny but i am also saving to get the weitec gt kit before christmas
I was going to soften the rear bar but havent had time
When you have fitted that kit let me know what its like, will be interesting

All I've done is switched off my ESP when giving it some and left it on when driving normally.
This is linked to when I'm on the track so its no problem for me.

Perhaps its you angel on your shoulder telling you your driving too fast for the road

Thing is you dont have drive fast or even push the car to activate it
Sometimes does stop enthusiastic driving as confidence in the cars ability is questioned

Not softened the rear bar yet, ill do it on the weekend.

Weitec Hicon GT setup is very nice, quality bits of kit.......I had it fitted today . The ride is still nice and compliant absorbing bumps like the standard setup, but it has less roll and just feels more tidy.
I got my top mounts and bearings replaced at the same time too.

This kit is on offer at the moment too so that was a bonus.

I got the garage to set it up at the maximum height as I did not want to drop it too much and ruin the ride quality. Its dropped about 20mm all round, maybe more at the back. The car now sits nice and level looks squat and agressive, and just clears speed bumps.

Unfortunately the problem with the bl00dy ABS still exists!!!

And you may verywell be right about the angel thing..................but like Ronin says mine cuts in at low speeds (40mph ish) and it seems to be more on sweeping bends that on tight agressive turns.

I must admit it does make me loose confidence in the car, especially when it does it under normal driving on a sweeping bend!!

I have the 23mm front, 28mm rear (on stiffest), S3 strutt brace and KWV3 coilovers.
There is some posts on looking to see if there is extra pressure on your ABS cables, you could check this

hi mate , not sure if this will help but i had this twice, once when i got my suspension changed and it turned out to be one of three of my bolts that went from the hub to the wishbone that was loose and kept cutting power when the wheel had any acceleration force low speed or fast or cornering load.i managed to tighten the the bolt and get car wheels aligned and sorted this. no fault codes if recollect or might have forgotten its been so long. just to add.

second time was when i had my driver side ball joint replaced , again needing the hub connecting to the wishbone 3 bolts to be removed and then put back on. this resulted in exact same problem so got mate to laser allign wheels again and no luck. he then actually manually had undo the bolts and straighten the wheel from straight ahead and then re tighten the 3 bolts making sure the front wheel vas sitting as vertical as the other side visulally, i no sounds bit guessy but he did it, then realligned the wheels and hey presto. been fine ever since. just to add, prior to fixing this time it did kick up the fault code for steering angle sensor.

So the alignment couldn't measure toe and you had issues with this?

yeah willie, was bit strange .seemed a bit non proper the way it was done but maybe a keen eye and some allignment later it was sorted.

Read with interest your probs...You only happened since changing ARB?
I would guess maybe damaged ABS sensor/s. I some banging has occurred whilst changing the ARB.....I have just changed my shocks and springs and since replacing my ABS lt and Traction was on, changed 1 ABS sensor, now Lt off but get ABS operating at low speeds when turning!!!!

So im gonna change both Front ABS sensors 14.00 each from GSF and go from there!!

Well that puts pay to my thoughts that my front bar was too big.

This fault occured for me on the way home from getting my first set of ARB's fitted (25mm front/25mm rear)! I had to change the rear bar to neuspeed as the first 25mm KW bar fouled my back box.

This is a nuisance fault!!

I'll check the bolts out to see if i have the same problem. It does seem to only be the front brakes (ABS) that seems to have the issue.

Hi Mate,

I wondered if it was the ABS sensor messing about. I've had a similar problem before in the past and it turned out that i needed a new steering wheel position sensor, but that brought up a fault and this has not.

I've tried resetting the zero postion of the steering sensor to see if it was that, as I had my steering rack re-furbed about 8 months ago and wondered if the new ARB's had effected the sensitivity of the sensor in some way.

I might just go for changing all 4 sensors and see if that sorts it out.
