I have done a quick search but can't find an answer to my question.

What is the best way of getting a performance upgrade on my leon?

Will a different air filter do anything worthwhile?

Will one of these 'black boxes' from ebay do anything but kick out lots of black smoke?

What about mapping it?

Cheers

I have done/tried all 3 on my 110. I have a pipercross panel filter fitted and bigger intake pipe which gives a slight increase, but probably only 3-4hp at most.

I had a tuning box off ebay fitted for around 3 months. It did give a noticable increase in performance, but it chucked out tons of black smoke, and it made the engine idle roughly.

I then fitted new injectors and a remap to suit, which made a good performance increase without the smoke and rough running.

I had it rolling roaded and it came out at 156bhp.

I have now had a full straight through exhaust fitted and looking at changing the turbo in the near future.

how much did these options cost?

is it worth while getting the filter? where do you get the intake pipe?

Get a remap first - usually a 25-35bhp and 40-60 lbs/ft gain.

No black smoke either.

Cost circa £250-£350 depending on where you go.

The filter was about £35 off of ebay, and I made the intake pipe from some cold air ducting. How to do it has been covered several times on the forum.

The injector nozzles were about £95, but I bought them from the US when the exchange rate was much better.

The remap was £340, but that was custom to suit the injectors.

There are several companies who can remap for different prices. Off hand a few of the main ones are Revo, Custom-code, P-Torque, Upsolute, Jabba.

I made most of the exhaust myself, so it cost about £50 for the tubing.

Somebody else will be able to tell you more, but I would say the biggest difference would be a remap. It should take it up to around 140hp.

Heatfan - theres loads on tuning the old 110 lump on here, have a read back through in the TDI section (as the TDI Tuning section might have some stuff but will probably be too new).

Willives sounds about right for his statements above. Agreed with his statement about the boxes, i found the same, they arent the best way to get more performance but this has been discussed many times, have a look back through the TDI section.

for your 110 tuning it depends how much money you have got to spend. A quick remap will give you another 30/40 horses roughly. But then if you go the bigger injector and even a hybrid turbo you can get even more. Upsolute are recommended for the non PDs, never heard a bad word about them, and they are a good price and mobile.

Hi Andy

We offer members the P-Torque remap which achieves approx 140hp. This is £265.00 all in, and rather than a ''flash and go'' type map, we dyno test every car before and after tuning to ensure all is well before mapping.

We can offer various tuning packages depending on how far you want to go, and what you want to acheive. Feel free to drop me an e-mail to [email protected] if you fancy a chat :)

Have a search for brad1 readers ride thread. He has modded his 110tdi to around 180bhp so should give you plenty of ideas.

If a tuning box is set up right you should be able to see about 130-135 without too much smoke. Not quite a good as a proper map tho. Cheap mod to give you a taste of what it can do though!

Don't forget if you plan on squeezing a substantial amount more power out, you'll probably need to look into an uprated clutch ;)

As jonjay said, check out my thread if you want, loads of info ;) and that is correct, we for me it was, when i had the bigger turbo put on and bigger injectors, the car had a slipping clutch when they mapped it, and got worse over time, so a couple of weeks later i had a full sachs uprated clutch put in it :)
