Heated Mirrors - On Constantly

As per the title guys.

I had my car in at the local dealers to get a leaking intercooler pipe replaced (see my separate thread 'Hissing Noise from Engine Compartment') but also asked them to fix this problem. Fortunately, the hissing from the intercooler pipe is now fixed but they can't figure out what is wrong with the mirrors. They told me that the switch on the centre console is giving an 'on/off' reading when switched on and off - as it should do - but apparantly the car's computer reads 'on' constantly. They have ordered a new mirror motor as this (allegedly) can cause this problem.

When I first got the car, this problem wasn't there - it was a feature that I'd never had before in a car so I checked that it worked and felt it heat up from cold. However, about 18 months ago some :censored: kicked my mirror off and I had to get the glass replaced. I'm guessing that this is when the problem started but I never noticed until about 6 weeks ago when ice melted on the mirror while the switch was set to adjust the left wing mirror.

So, sorry for the novel, but has anyone else encountered this problem? Maybe from your replies, I can tell the stealers what is wrong! :D

Thanks in advance.

Update:

Handed the car to the stealers to get a replacement motor fitted. When I went back to collect the car, I couldn't open the drivers door after pressing the 'open' button on the remote. I tried all the other doors which were fine. I told the 'engineer' who then took the car back into the garage to fit a replacement door latch, there and then as he had one in stock. I got the car back 45 minutes later, complete with drivers door that would open....only to find that when the burd tried to get into the passenger side later on that night, she couldn't open the door!!

What is there inside the door panel that can cause this to happen? Sounds a bit suspicious to me . Am I being messed about? The car's booked to go in on Thursday to get fixed...again.

Some squeeks are beginning to appear too. Makes me wonder whether keeping it after the 3 year mark in September is a good idea. K1 here I possibly come! :D

I have a similar problem with heated mirrors constantly on.

Recenctly had drivers mirror replaced as this was not heating up, but passengers did work and was always on, now both heat up and are still always on.

Doesn't make any difference whether the heated mirror switch is set either on/off, they are always on.

Any ideas ??

I may be stating the obvious but the mirrors are always on if the knob is in the 6 o'clock position. That's how they all are, mine included. You have to have the knob pointing to left or right or folded in to switch off the heaters. Sounds daft but that's just how it is.

EDIT,

If you look closely at the knob it shows a little heating element on the little icon at the 6 o'clock position...........

Nath,

cheers for the reply, I have the mirror switch set to either left or right mirror position, ie not 6 or 12 but they are still on.

If, as I suspect the relay has failed then it's just a case of plug n play a new relay.

some of the relays are pluged into the same board as the fuses, and some by the battery under the bonnet. The problem is sorting out what relay is the one for the mirror heaters as the owners book probably doesn't say.

A new relay will be about £10 I would have thought or even cheaper from a scrap yard.

As I said in a previous post, I got the problem of the mirrors constantly heating up fixed, to the detriment (wow, a big word for a Sunday! :D) of the door locks. They said the problem with the mirrors was to do with the motors attached to mirros to angle them. Whether that's true or not, I don't know but the problem's fixed.

I eventually got my passenger door fixed on the last day of the warranty. It was intermitently not opening i.e. maybe 2 times out of ten. It turned out to be a cable underneath the exterior door handle that was too tight. The mechanic loosened it a little and voila, it opens every time now.

Cheers all,

Will look into the relay option as car already out of warranty.

Fingers crossed!;)
