Egg shaped tyres!

Hi guys,

Just thought i'd run this past you all, I have just started hearing a low rumble between 20-30 mph that speeds up with car speed almost gone by 50-60 , sounds like a loose or flat tyre is the only way I can explain it, no movement through steering wheel.

Took the car to local vw/audi (non dealer) and he had a listen and pointed out my back tyres are slightly wearing on the edges and my whole tyre is egg shaped!! both of them!! commonly called "egging" ??

These are Avon ZZ3, not super expensive but not cheap either.

Is this a tyre fault or an over inflation fault?

Any info would be appreciated.

The wear on both edges indicates over inflating and as for the "egging" that is most likely that the steel belts have snapped. It could be a fault in the tyre but near impossible to prove, most likely be impact damage due to potholes or kerbs.

Is the edge wear on the tyres even round the circumference?

Do you mean there was an egg-shaped lump on the sidewall of your tyre?

If the shoulders of the tyre are worn then as above tyre under inflated. As to the egging, you'll find that a sharp stone or nail has gone into tyre at some point and over time moisture has got in there and caused the steel plys to rust and snap. How old are the tyres? Also if you bought them then go back to the tyre centre that fitted them and they should be able to send them back as complaints for the manufactorer to test,but you'll have to buy new tyres in the mean time. If tyres are a fault then the manufactor should send you money back in compensation anywhere from 10% - 100%.

At work we call this feathering and the tyres are usually shaped more like a 50p usually happens on older tyres.

Sorry guys taken me ages to get some photos.

DPJ - no egg shapped lumps that i can see, the guy was running his hand over the tread of the tyre.

andy_w - the noise sounds like a 50p shaped tyre now that you point it out!!

Not sure on age only had the car a year, just replaced the fronts as they were on the limit, backs have a fair bit of tread left on them see photos.

This tyre mate was made on the 28th week of 2007. So the problem could be caused from accidental damage (nail etc going in tyre and causing the plys to be damaged) or how/where the tyre was stored before fitted to you car (ie contamination). If you're going anywhere near Lakeside at all mate pm me and I'll have a closer look for you. Either way the tyre needs to be replaced.

I just noticed something in your photos, the outer edge of the tread seems to be perishing but i don't think this will have anything to do with the cords in the tyre snapping.

Thank you mate, now i know what 2807 means (never knew that) need to get local tyre peps to spin the wheels up so i can see if its both or just one, my luck it will be both!

If them pics are of both rear tyres then yes they are both suffering from egging. The pitting is prob due to grit(salt) on the road also if you live near the sea the spray can cause it, along with tyre shine (causes the tyre to not release the wax particles when hot). Its basically happening because the tyre is or has lost the wax particles that are put in tyre when being made they help keep moisture in the tyre. Its common on all tyres, mostly with age (tyres have shelf life of 6 yrs). Nearly all tyres on the market in 225/40/18 will be XL's, easiest way to check is make sure the tyre has a load index rating of 92 and above. Its the same no before the Y or W after the size.

i had the same problem with michelens tyres...

after i bort the my lcr,i took it to a local tunning garage. and they said the tyres had 48psi in them instead of 32 to 34 ish.. and over inflation causes egging of the trye...and pot holes..

the tyre actualy strectches from heavy impacts (when over inflated) scary when you think they could blow out if left to long

ok so they are all AVON ZZ3 225/45/17 91Y, LC only have 17" Wheels. both rear @ 32psi.

should they be 92?

Also not near sea, tyre shine = bad?
