Strange up/down boost problem

Got a bit of a strange one, my Cupra is boosting a bit oddly on part throttle. If I accelerate using part throttle, the boost goes up to 1.5bar, then back to 0.5 and up/down/up/down then settles for part throuttle driving. It's annoying as the car surges and slows as this happens. On WOT the car bost fine, spikes just over 1.5bar and then drops up the rev range.

Have checked VAGCOM and there are no faults logged, have logged airflow as I thought this may be an issue, but the figures seem ok, maxing at 156gms. Thinking it could be MAF related, as I had it off the car at the weekend and it was dirty (been on for 3 years or so). Other idea is N75 maybe? Vac lines are all checked and have recently been replaced with silicone hose, so can't think what else it could be or what to check, any ideas guys?

sometimes your MAF sensor will not show up any faults but can still be causing a problem.

if you unplug your maf and run your car then it could be that.

try it and see if it helps. your tc light will come on though. but will go off when you re plug your maf in.

Hi Rob, hows things?

Its more than likely your N75 valve playing up. Try logging your wastegate duty on block 118. Also check all your vac hoses are plumbed in correctly as you have recently replaced them.

Hi Ollie, I’m good thanks mate hope you are too? Thanks for the advice, I’ll have a go at logging block 118 to see what that says, I’ve a feeling it could be N75 related you know. All good here cheers mate. Yeah the C valves were superseded with the F variant. PM me your email address and i'll send you a copy of lemmiwinks if you dont already have one. Its dead easy to use, just increase the timing offset in Ch09 till you see CF's of around 3 on block 020 in Vag-Com. You'll probably be able to add around 3 degrees or so. Block 003 shows your actual timing curve which should ideally increase smoothly to redline.

You need to remember to remove the insrument cluster fuse when using Lemmiwinks otherwise it wont communicate with the ecu. I think its fuse no.26, second from left on the top row of your fuse box.

I would get your boost issues sorted first thought before you have a play with this ;)

this in return gives a missfire every now & again and my ecu light comes on along with the dreaded limp mode. Im kinda fed up of it now and a solution would be great.

Its been like it since i bought it last december. since then its had 4 new coil packs, 2 sets of plugs and 2 new mafs and the problem persists. Im all out of ideas! i just think the map isn't right.

It had a KO3s CC stage 2 map at Badger 5 about 2 months before i bought it and i think it needs a proper map and not a generic.

Any Help?

You've bypassed the N75 valve how? By fitting a boost contoller? Or do you mean you have done a N249 bypass? Have you had the car plugged into Vag-Com to scan for faults?

I havn't done it personally but i was told it has been done. iv got some wires coming from the coil looms with resistors on which bypass is that? i also have a blanked off ribbed hose. i come from a saxo vts background so havn't really got a clue when it comes to vw engines with turbo's lol.

all due respect - bollox.. ;) the map would have been fine when it left me and will still be now. Maps dont change :rolleyes:

Check your pipes for leaks etc etc.. map is not the cause, it did'nt do it when remapped, so "something else" has "changed" - look there first. Whats changed since?

No remap will map out an inherant fault.. you will waste your money
Sounds like you have some pipe issues and some bodged solenoid bypasses done on there... all of which can piss the ecu off and cause running problems.

If you want it looking at, call me...

Quick update - Ten out of ten Ollie, I replaced the N75 today with a newer F variant and the boost problem has now gone, thanks for the advice... :thumbup:

Its dead easy to use, just increase the timing offset in Ch09 till you see CF's of around 3 on block 020 in Vag-Com. You'll probably be able to add around 3 degrees or so.

Have also been playing with Lemmiwinks today, 2.25deg added and I'm getting CF's below 3 where they are shown, 3deg's added and I'm getting 2.5-3's but have seen some around 3.8's so thinking 2.25deg is good?

Edit - Been out this evening and done more logs, CF's @ 2.25deg's is below 3 around 2, upped to 3deg's timing and now pulling 2.8's. Guessing the denser evening air has this impact? Not sure wether to keep timing on 3 or drop it back? Goes better on 3 :)

Glad you got it sorted Rob! Occasional CF's of 3.8 are ok aslong as they are not sustained, but bare in mind the ambient temperatures of late are quite low but in slightly warmer weather you may notice the CF's rise to a higher unacceptable level.

I would log block 020 and 003 together to show your actual timing curve and post the logs up here for us to look at. Looks like you've got it running pretty sweet now though ;)

Cheers Ollie - I've take some logs this morning, three with timing 3.00 and three with timing 2.25. The first run on each has lower CF's, but runs two and three see them creep up, maybe heatsoak factor in between me stopping and setting the laptop to log again? Here they are anyway, blocks 020 and 003, what are your thoughts? I'm reckoning 2.25 timing is prob best.

Nice logs there mate. Yeah i would personally stick with the added 2.25° as it will give you a bit of head room if your really giving it some beans. If the weather gets much cooler you may get away with increasing it to 3.00° but as it stands i wouldn't as your seeing slightly excessive CF's.

You timing curve looks good and airflow readings are healthy too! ;)
