he say the car runs fine spot on but then when he put the amp lead on the batt to conect it it then pops the ecu again there for this is my problem???? thoughts please

It should blow the fuses in the amp before the ecu i would have thought, tell him not to connect the amp up next time!!

well ye thats what he is gunna do but i cant help feel that that is not the problem, and some how much can is runnind but not realy the right way if you get me,why the hell would it use the most expesive and important part on the car as the fuse(ecu) the amp has 3 fuses on plus the one on the power lead also the thing is earthed, something dont dound rite and seems abit fishy, recon when i get it back and running after 2months of them haveing it(what a joke) im gunna run it down jabba and see if they can shed any light

Like you say it should blow the fuses in the amp first and it don't sound right to me either, i still reckon an unannounced drop in is called for myself.

It IS possible. We had a problem once where, due to bad earthing, part of the wiring loom was earthing through the ECU. Was a bugger to trace though (2 ECU's later) and had to replace/renew quite a bit of wiring.

Obviously leaving the amp out/disconnected would prove/disprove the theory. Obviously the underlying cause would NOT be the amp itself, the large current draw of the amp would be highlighting the bad earthing (if this is the case).

any idear why it would use the ecu as the fuse tho,ive gad this amp pn the car for two years and not a problem ,then the car befor that is was on a year then the car befor that it was on that for two years all wired up the very same way every time

I had the same problem on my Corsa. i had ripped out the 02 sensor and it kept shorting out my ECU. Any feedback or voltage spike in the system can feed back anywhere and seems like its your ECU getting all the bumming.

i feel like the bloke just hasent done his job rite,i mean he hasent even found the corz realy he has just left the amp lead of and yea it runs no ecu popping "waaaaayyyyyyyyy ive fixed it" when realy all he did was stumble across it found out it runs with out the amp wire on the batt away we go,but at the end of the day there is still a problem there some where wich it dosent look like he is going to find out what the corz is,and then i feel like im running about in a bodged car,so its not the amp at fault its the large curent drawn from the amp wich is intern then finding a bad earth,so lets say he gives me the car back with just the amp lead left of the batt.......ok so its running ,then what happen when im driving along lights on heater on wipers on ect ect there for more high curent then it pops the ecu AGAIN i just feel the bloke hasent thought about this....now when he presents me the bill would you pay it all has realy the job is not realy done.....i just dont know what to do

I see what you are saying mate just because he has 'found' a 'possible' reason the ECU keeps blowing doesn't mean he has fixed it.

Maybe say you will pay but if the problem reoccurs you want him to look at it for free as he clearly hasn't 'fixed' it.

what amp is it out of interest?

The fact its a phoenix gold amp and its only running 400wrms makes me question really if the problem is the amp. Phoenix gold arn't exactly cheap kit.

Have you tested it with another similar powered amp? I would say before you pay the guy get him to test that if he is so confident its the amp?

if you havn't already stick a post on talkaudio forum with this problem and see what they say, maybe give you a new direction to take the issue.

i agree. take the amp off the seat or get some plastic spacers. the seat is attached to the frame of the car and may cause your issue, i am affraid the mechanic maybe right, however dont forget water likes getting in these cars to drown the ecu, you will also need to start ripping thiings out and checking all the earths.

why pay a mechanic when you can do it yourself. dont forget we are all here to lend a hand should you get any problems

Exactly, unfortunately it's a bit of needle in a haystack but it's not rocket science. It will just take time and plenty of it to find the offending earth strap/s.

Start at the battery and work back, take off the earths and clean/roughen up to ensure good mating with the vehicle body. One thing you could do (if you have a multimeter) is measure the resistance of each earth first, obviously you want as near to zero ohms as possible, anything with a higher resistance will not be a good earth and current will find an easier route to ground..

i think to be honist il just leave the amp out now as he has poped the ecu three times now tring to find the issue and i darent try refit the amp and rewire it incase the ecu pops AGAIN,it a real shame as that lil set up sounded realy class,il leae the JL 6x9 in and just wire them up to std then maby get some nice speakers to replace the std ones in the front and just be done with it,im not a megga bass fan at all but a wee bit there dos make it sound nice
