Right i have had this noise coming from my car for a few months now. I thought it was driveshaft related but when i changed that it didnt go away . I havnt actually got a pic but if you open the bonnet and look at the passenger side inner cv joint there is a slight gap then the side nearest the bluckhead there is something thats the same sort of shape as a coke can and i have loads of grease coming out of there some how i seem to think this is whats making the creaking noise. Dose anybody no if this is possible or what its the technical pharse i am looking for for this object ;)

I cant help you mate but I have a noise when I turn aswell. Except mine is more like a metal rubbing/catching sound.

I had this, but only when hot. Mine was coming from the power steering, you could even feel it through the steering wheel.

Dealer said i needed a new rack , but i put in some additive, and it shut up!

Yeah that's the stuff J. Wynns is good stuff.

But don't go to Halfrauds for it, get friendly with your local motor factor and get it for half that price. ;)

It may be, but in my experiance, always start with the cheapest fixes first!!

£5 or so, and little effort. ;)

By creaking noise, do you mean like a rotation related noise, or does it do it even when the car is stationary?

Reason i ask is that mine was doing it, getting worse, was feeling it through the steering etc, moving and stationary.

Had a poke round, followed the sound etc, and it turns out to be the track rod ends!

Both of the little rubber covers/boots etc are split, though there is no play in the joint, and because the grease has gone, they had dried out and rusted a bit, hence the noise.

Squirted in some WD40, moved the steering a bit to work it in, now silient and alls well!!!

worth a shot maybe?

I dont have a gti but someone will know if they are fixed or hydralic mounts on the box? i wouldve expected fixed? as above check for any play in the tie rod and rack end joints. With the car on a ramp, give the wheels a little side to side movement. if you can feel a knock or play its likely to be that. Also if it does it when stationary it could be the top mounts - especially if your car is lowered on springs and they wernt replaced.
