tyre profiles that wont scrub on 17's

I dont want as low as the 205-40-17 that i have on because u feel every bump , i was told to try 225-45-17's would those scrub? lowered 50mm

I wanted to put 215/45/17 on my FR to make it a smoother ride and protect the alloy from rubbing of kerbs when parking but kwick fit said it would mess the handling up that SEAT spend years to develop on the FR and it would void the warrenty.

Is this true?

i just put 215/40's on mine and perfect, no more clonking when going over humps and potholes. moving to 45 profile might be an issue going into bends and under heavy weight...however most of the issues of rubbing will only happen on the front tyres

I spoke to 2 different guys at kwick fit at 2 different times and they both told me that I would need to lower the profile to 35 if I wanted to widen the tyres. Why would this be? They both said about the handling thing as well.

I think the 35 refers to the percentage of the width, so 225/40/17's would be taller than 205/40/17's. So Kwik Fit are saying if you go wider then the profile will need to be lower.

I tried 205/50/17's on the rear recently and they rubbed big style. Also caused the traction control to come on. Strangely enough, I measured the 205's and found they were actually 225mm wide, whereas the 205/40/17 were 205mm wide (not covering the alloy very well). The 50's were about 2 inches taller than the 40's.

I would look at using 215/40/17's or maybe 205/45's would fit.

I'd reckon that any where like KwikFit etc, that fits tyres to your car, would always advise and fit the "correct" tyre for that car. If they did not they would end up in court when or if things turned to sh**e - ie after an accident when the driver tried to plead ignorance to the error of fitting "other" tyre sizes.

Yes the reason to drop the aspect ratio of the tyre would be to keep the wheel (tyre) rolling radius the same to avoid speedo errors.

To the OP, you seem to want a more "forgiving" ride, to do that as you have worked out, you would need to increase the aspect ratio - but you seem to be trying to do this AND go for a wider tyre - that will lead to speedo errors and change the overall gearing of the car.

I'd reckon that if 205/40 R 17 is the correct tyre for the car then you have no where to go to improve things and keep your insurance happy.

Ok going up to 215 looks good, only 8mm bigger. I just think the 205's are far too skinny on the FR's 17" alloys.
