Eeek! Temperature sensor issues...

Hi guys... Problem with the car on the way home from work today...

Recently when the car is cold, sat at lights the revs go above 1k for 30 seconds then dip back to normal, then will do this a few times, until warm.

Today, on the way home from work, as normal the car normally gets up to 75 on the temp thing on the dash before I get to the dual carriage way. I got onto the dual carriage way... and obviously had eyes on the road not the gauges... and got off the dual carriage way about 1.5 miles later... look at dash.. and the temp gauge has dropped to less than 60 as if it was cold again...

I kept an eye on it... and it suddenly shot up to 90 as it should be. This is the first time it's done this, well, first time I've noticed it...

The car was driving fine before and after... so I don't know if its safe to drive or not...

What could it be guys?

I have a TDi SE 110. 51-plate.

Others might correct me on this, Im not sure if the td uses the same temp sensor as the 180 LC, but i had exactly the same issue, temp dial jumping from 60-90 holding at 90, then dropping to 60 for a while , visa versa,

locate your temp sensor, see if its the black of green one, the green was the updated replacement ,very common fault IIRC,

Yeah for sure, they have two senders, one to tell the ecu and one to tell the dials,

just check the coolant, if its low in the header tank then its probably something else but i very much doubt it, if anything it eould of sent the temp into the red and overheated, so i'd say you'll be fine

that i dont know mate, it wont throw an engine fault on OBDII so i doubt it and i dont know if tdi used obdII until 03, , i dont have VAGcom yet so cant really give an answer !

you could always have a look,

The temp sensor on the 180 LC was a 10 min job, cold engine, cover off, break old clip to sensor (cant get it of without breaking usually) sensor out- new sensor in, new clip in,

buy one with the full set including new oring and clip, and go steady putting the new clip back on, my new one broke with me being heavy handed!,

best bet mate, but being honest its exactly how my temp sensor started to kick off too, so im 99.9% thats what it is,

just get a second opinion on what temp sensor it is, as im not sure the one i linked is the same as the TDI,

i drove mine for a good 2-3 weeks with no issues on a duff sensor, reason i think it sends out two signals to the ecu and dials
