First mods questions....

Just planning my first set of mods, and I'm leaning towards getting:

PD160 intake (& smoothed etc.)
Green cotton filter
Decat & downpipe

If I go down this route without a remap, my questions are:
  • How much of a performance increase will I see?
  • How will this affect my mpg?
  • Will I get any warning lights with the decat (TDI)?
  • Is there anything to worry about (e.g. overboosting/running lean/other stuff I don't know about)?

I'm trying to hold off on the remap for a while as I'm ultra-paranoid about clutch slip, though I wouldn't mind a little more performance and mpg if I can get it? I also thought that if I leave the remap until after I've done all this then I could just get it remapped properly for these mods, rather than doing it once for a stock car, and then again later for a modded car.

use the search facility mate as it's been covered to death ;)

p.s. if torque is kept at 300lbs/ft or below then you don't need to worry about clutch slip...just don't welly it under 1,5k revs

I'm not sure the exact combo of mods (filter, intake, DP & decat) has been covered though (either that or my google-fu has failed me again), so I'd appreciate some advice!

As far as the torque goes, it seems that a lot of the remaps quote < 300lbft when mapped on a stock car, but there are loads of people here pulling > 300lbft when it makes it to the rollers.

Having knacked a clutch on my last car due to excess torque, I'm not keen to do it again.... :D

dont bother spending £100 on the PD160 intake, buy a whiteline rear anti roll bar £125ish. you will feel more benifits

in that case i think the decat and downpipe will help the turbo spool a tad quicker, from what others have mentioned...the filter and air intake won't have much effect performance-wise (just a bit more whistle)

with regards to RRs, rollers always give varied readings and are never taken for granted. some members have had very high standard figures from rollers. i can only suggest, if you are, like me, wary of keeping the clutch in best shape with a remap, then keep torque <= 300 lbs/ft. it's still more than the Cupra's :)

you do notice that the engine revs a lot more freely with the panel filter

possibly, but as for power gains there wouldn't be any noticeable difference

p.s. you got stickers on your rear windows Steve?

there are very little power gains but you do notice how much more freely the engines revs even when unmapped.

the stickers i have on my rear windows were put on for the nurburg ring trip. they are rally style name stickers.:)

So the consensus is that the PD160 intake just isn't worth it?

So panel filter + decat & DP + remap then?

What about the mpg / warning lights etc. then?

Also, is it possible to ask a tuner to limit the low end torque to below 300lbft? When I had my ST, I know Superchips released 'low-torque' versions of all their maps which had the same top end power, but 10% less bottom end torque to try and limit clutch wear.

i believe most of the generic maps (from forum sponsors) are designed to be below 300lbs/ft...however this figure can vary on rollers so you should be fine

as to whether they can be tailored...i doubt it, as they are 'generic'

i would say thats a better combo. best bet speak to one of the mappers in the sponsors area. its not just what torque the map produces its how it produces it. if its a harsh torque map like revo maps then it will wear the clutch, if its a low torque high bhp map like custom code then it wont, if its a smooth map like P Torque then it wont providing your not booting it from 1000 rpm.

when i looked into mapping mine i decide on P Torque as it gives you the best combo e.g a decent power gain, with high torque and a smooth map. the turbo on mine kicks in at 1500 rpm and holds a smooth power delivery round to the red line.

Where do you find the whiteline rear anti roll bars? Looking for one for myself.. Ibiza Cupra 1.8T 2007 model. Cheapest place I can get as I will have to import it and charges are mad.

Sorry for the thread hijacking.. I'm also looking for a good place that has a good price on EVOMS intake for the Cupra's aswell as the Miltek turbo back exhaust system with sports cat. Cheapest online store available?

Thanks in advance mates..

In my opinion, if you were to do all those mods, why not just do the remap first with the money you intend to spend and see what else you want later one:D:D

i have pd160 intake with green cotton filter, little gains but makes bit more noise when accelerating. Not worth the money so best to pick up cheap second hand

i have cat-back at the moment but going for a decat and downpipe, is meant to free up the engine and help the turbo spool more

would take steve's advice and get a whiteline ARB, its a cheap mod with good results
