coilover ISSUES

rear coilovers just gone on... and KNOCKING!!!

Howdy,

Just finished up fitting the rear struts. (dreaded fronts in the morning).

There is a knocking from the rear left side suspension. Sounds a bit like its coming from the top. is this a common one? any thoughts? A mate of mine has just fitted different coilovers to his bora and has the EXACT same noise. It doensnt sound like a clunk though... more a plasticky nock?

We;re doing the fronts in the morning so any advice would be awesome ASAP so that while we've got tools out we can try and resolve it.

Did you relace the top mounts with the new coilovers? observe correct torque setting and grease them up when you fitted the coilovers, they would be my first port of call.

forgive my stupididty but arent top mounts at the front?? no everything is as it was but in good nick as it was new as of 6 months ago. everything greased and tightend accordingly.

No, you have top mounts on the back too, at the top of each strut, you can over tigthen them causing to much friction.

If you are fitting coilovers in my expierence you should always replace all top mounts and bearings,i have found this out the hard way.

what JOM kit do you fit? and how much have you lowered it by already on the rear?

i'll pop up which kit it is in the morning. the rear has lowered by about 1-2 centimeters (but its a bit lop sided) we anticipated seeing more of a drop given the amount of travel left on the adjuster (we went about half way). The over tightening you refer to, is that of the two bolts that attch it to the chassis or the one bolt on the top of the strut?

i will get new bolts/bushes/bearings etc as soon as funds will allow. i was a bit eager to get the kit on as theres a pretty good meet (norice) on tomorrow evening and it will probably be the last good one of the season

that the bolts on top of the strut, it should be able 44lbft, someone correct me if i am wrong.also give the suspension some time to settle.

I had my rear adjuster 3 threads from the bottom on the back for the drop i wanted on my LCR.

Did you check inside the top mount bushing that there was the correct spacers in there.
There is a plastic 'piece' that fits ontop of the coilover.
Perhaps your lop sidedness was due to this??

yeah it all went together with all the bits. i've just been out and let it down a few threads but its no different. to be honest its always been higher on that side. maybe my chassis has twisted or something!! i'm taking it into JKM this afternoon so i'll ask when i get there and post the results for anyone who has experienced this

When you do the fronts I think you will find the pass side sits lower than the drivers.

I think its normal as I adjusted all mine evenly with a vernier gauge and it didn't sit level......I did a search on here and people say its normal and something to do with the the Leon being made for the LHD market?

i think so, my last LCR always sat low on one side, i replaced everything trying to fix it, all in vain.

At least will coilovers you can level both sides up.

Thats excatly what I've done...took a while and its not 100% level but much better than before.

Yup that was me that said about the Leon being LHD and is higher at the neasr side and lower at the offside.
Mine was approx 1/8" difference
But as I fitted coilovers I made my offside 1mm higher to allow for my fat ass

well actually 59.59NM, i do 60nm(44lbft) and a 1/4 turn.

this guide is for KW variant 2, but the same torque values and fitting works across the board.

you may have seen my last thread about fitting isssues with coilies.

finished them this morning and went to take it to get the tracking checked. en route it dropped some more (settling into place??) to the extent that it was bottoming out. By the time i had gone 5 mins on the motorway i had warning lights for :ABS, TCS, Brakes and another brake symbol (amber, circle with dashed brackets around it)

... quite simply... HELP!!

jack it up and re-adjust the springs.

sounds like they are too low, the lower you go the more crashie and bottoming out you will get.

what car is this and it might help us a bit with how low you can go.

its a mk1 leon cupra 180 (2004 facelift)
