I have been reading a lot about dsg issues recently apparantl there have been 2 recalls , at least that I have heard of. Has anyone here had any problems with them?

My Mechatronics unit was replaced under warranty on my first DSG and was fine afterwards, but the other two cars I've had have both been excellent. I haven't heard of any recalls in the UK, but the USA have had a faulty batch with failing MCU's, which prompted VW to up the warranty on the DSG box in the USA to 10years. So far this hasn't been extended to anywhere else AFAIK. 99% of DSG cars in the UK that had this fault will have had the MCU replaced if it was faulty under warranty as it is noticeable.

Some obvious symptoms are.....

Jerking into gears on accelleration and decelleration
"Kangarooing" at low speeds up to approx 30mph
Lack of control in reverse - the car surges and again clunks into reverse.
Uneven "lumpy" idle.
Extreme symptom is stalling from standstill

Some of these symptoms (2 & 4) could also be from a failing/failed coilpack.

Reasonably speaking though, there are an awful lot of DSG cars out there and it only needs relatively few failures to highlight issues, especially given the potential expense of a new MCU or gearbox. The boxes are a lot stronger than people think - just look at what I've been pushing through mine for the last 18months. If I had a manual gearbox I'd be at least on an aftermarket clutch by now....and those cost upwards of £500!!

Well, my issue is that I am considering buying an 07 dsg FR. Once the warranty runs out in less than a year I'm scared I may end up with a huge bill if something does go wrong. I understand these things cost £5000 to replace!

I'm slightly put off by what this guy says. About half way down, post by "tame technician":

I went through the same worries about DSG issues when debating with myself which car to buy recently to replace my Golf TDI mk4, but really I think DSG is pretty reliable (he says, touching wood). Essentially, you generally only hear the horror stories online, as people who don't have problems are just out there enjoying their lives rather than posting online about how their gearbox works as it should. :)

It's certainly going to be very expensive if you *do* need a whole new 'box outside of warranty, but that's an unlikely scenario. If you're going to sell your car after a few years, as most do, then you probably shouldn't worry about it too much.

My 07 Fr Tfsi is fine and on it's most recent service the dealers ran a check for re-calls/service bulletins and none were disclosed.
They are not as good as trad autos at reversing on slopes though!
