Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place to be posting, but it does relate to SEAT dealerships.

Has anyone else found that if they are using the scrappage scheme that dealers are completely unwilling to give any discount on the car?

I went around quite a few VAG dealerships both in the South where I live and in the North East where I'm from and the majority of dealerships ended up using the scrappage discount as a shield to say that because of it they wern't allowed to do any further discount off the car.

Now I do understand that the scrappage is a good deal, for me at least, my cars 18 years old still 90% working but things are starting to go on it and from a safety point of view it is back in the stone age, no air bags etc. But the thing is the scrappage isn't special to that particular garage it's nationwide it's so not giving any further discount is taking away my incentive to buy my car at their garage.

Just wondering what other peoples thoughts on this are?

On the plus side I did find a really good garage willing to do a very good deal (from a 1st time car buyers perspective) for me and service from them has been top notch so far, but I supose the proof will be when the car arrives mid November.
BTW the garage was Pinchbecks in Middle Wallop.

They are, but having found that some dealerships that were willing to do a deal beyond the scrappage to get my business, I find it odd that others would not budge citing that because I was using the scrappage allowance they are not allowed to do a deal at all.

It just goes to show what looking at different places can do. There must still be a profit in the car even after scrappage. I mean one garage quoted me £1500 off if I bought the car cash however they then proceeded to say that they couldn't give me anything after scrappage, even though the brand VW were only putting in half for scrappage and claiming the rest back, I mean how does that work?
That still puts them £500 up on the cash deal they offered doesn't it, or am I taking a very simplistic view?

you do get a discount doing the scrapage deal. just because they wont offer a further discount i dont see that as being out of order.
You have the option to discuss a straight cash deal, (excluding your car), then figure in what you can realistically ge for the car. Then compare the two.

If you really want to try anyway, ratjher than going for a further discount you coudl try going for more service... as in free servicing for so long etc...

I realise you do get a discount for the scrappage deal, that's why I took full advantage of it.
All I mean is, and I'm not explaining myself very well sorry for that, but the scrappage deal is nationwide, I could walk into VW, Ford, BMW etc and still get £2000 pounds off. The discount I mean is where is the incentive to make me buy the car then and there from that particular garage? I know it sounds like I am windging about nothing and you are probably right but in my mind it makes sense, there has to be an incentive to make me buy the car from a specific garage, not just pay the going rate.

Thanks for the advice anyway, though I did get the car sorted in the end and seem to have found a nice garage to deal with. I meant this thread to be there for anyone else in my situation just so they know that not every garage takes the scrappage as the bottom price for the car.

I got a good deal at the very last minute in September this year...I noticed on SEAT's main website that they were doing the Leon Emocion on special under the scrappage scheme. £4140 off! Very tempting. However I found out that I didnt have long to make up my mind as the offer was likely to change the following month but also all prices go up by £500 due to the Euro adjustment nationwide. So basically I saved £4640 compared to todays price (not including the additional VAT increase next year as well!). I literally passed over my deposit within minutes of the price change. Had the offer been on any model I would have gone for the next model up SE as you get quite a bit more kit for the extra £700, but im still happy. Car is due to be ready in December but wont hold my breath.
Going back to your comments on this thread,I must admit I did get the feeling the dealer wasnt fussed on whether he took my money or not. Whether it was because it was last thing on a Friday or whether it was because he wasnt making much I dont know?
Noticed the current offers are not so generous. Im wondering whether it was a last ditch attempt before scrappage funds ran out as I got my deal a day or two just before the government announced another 100m injection into the scheme which I guess for now, has taken pressure off to use and abuse the scheme as an incentive selling tool.
You also have to read the small print on the SEAT website as some more generous offers are for pre-registered and not build to order! I personally prefer to wait as I know that my car hasn't been sitting in a field for up to a year. Not saying that this is what SEAT do but still you hear stories of this happening especially with poor vehicle sales of recent times. You also get the most recent spec. I got the USB/AUX port in mine which until very recently was £100 optional extra. Its standard now across the board.

Its funny, VW offered me an extra £600 off the new polo on top of the £2000 scrappage. Yet to find a Seat dealer offering anything on the ibiza above the normal scrappage deal.

sounds like a good deal that, already in stock or order to spec ?

what's the price difference to the equivalant Seat model though ?

To order, wouldn't sell the showroom models as they would have to wait too long for replacements. I drove the 1.2 70 SE, beautifully made and use of materials but they are about £1500 more than equivalent Ibiza.

Not had chance to drive the ibiza yet but I would guess they feel pretty similar. Not a huge fan of 3cyl 1.2 but also a bit nervous to leave VAG group as its all I have ever owned. Although a Suzuki Swift test drive has had me tempted for a week or so. Grrrr what to do.......

The scrappage scheme is effectively the Govt making the manufacturer give you a £1000 discount. The Govt nominally dibs in the other £1000 but still wins overall because you have to pay VAT on the new car whereas without the scrappage you are much more likely to have gone second hand.

Haggle for a cash deal and bigger discounts may be available for less in-demand vehicles

Pinchbecks also offered me a total of £2500 against the old Passat. If they can afford to do so other dealers surely can?

Sadly I can't afford a Bocanegra AND an EXEO ST (can't really afford either yet :whistle:) but if I could the scrappage might seal the deal.

I can't do my scrappage deal for another week or so (12months in my name). I really want to get something from stock as not prepared to factory order and wait around for months. Who are the biggest holders of stock in the NW? I am thinking Ibiza SC either SE/Sport. (not too fussy on spec, in a bit of a rush to get a car mainly)

im a car salesman. seat dealers are franchised therefore owned by private companys. get some companys like ours have a policy not to do any more than scrappage, others will, hence u get different results.
however the manufactures layout the different deals. there is no such this as a "better deal for cash" as we make a packet on the finance people like lloyds tsb will pay through there noses to get finance buisness from us so often youl find this is the best way to get a low price however you pay intrest over the time so total is higher!

with the vauxhall product GM lay out 3 deals we can do with or without scrappage.

cash price which is minor support from vauxhall and the rest is how much of our profit margin we can afford.

0% finance which is normally the list price and thats what you have to pay.

FDA which is finance deposit allowance this deal will normaly acheive the best price of the vehicle and is flexible to how much you can afford per month and what deposit you have. my preffered method!

we get paid quite literaly a handling charge from vauxhall of anywhere between 300-900 pounds however we have to use this to inspect the car and fit all the parts and accesories (pdi) valet the car, pay the bills, and my wages!

with scrappage deals and i can only speak for vauxhall we get a reduced fee as the chosen manufacture has to subsidise it! ie scrappage and 0% makes it a near marginless deal for the dealer. even if vauxhall still take a good profit from it.
therefore we cant physically give anymore.

some of the large franchised companys get paid a larger fee per car because of the size of their business! therefore can afford the sell the car cheaper using their larger margin!

theres alot of pollitics behind it all but i hope that makes it clearer.

I bought a new Leon Cupra in August and rang four dealers in the Bristol area. Not one would offer anything more than the SEAT scrappage deal. In fact one advised that I should purchase the car from the nearest dealer for convenience. I struggled to get mats thrown in for free!!

I think they have also introduced two price increases since then.
