Help - Noise coming from front left brakes when cruising

Hi All,

My front left brake has developed an annoying scraping / squeaking sound. Some times it's scraping like metal against metal. It alternates between scraping and squeaking and turning the streering wheel seems to change the sound but not in any definite way, like sometimes it will start squeaking when I turn left but sometimes it will scrape and it's only once per revolution of the wheel.

Had the wheel and caliper off on the weekend to see if there was anything lodged between the pad and disc (it's made a ring around my disc about a cm thick) but nothing was there....

Could it be a warped disc somehow? Don't know how it could have warped! I don't usually brake hard although a few days ago I did go for a spirited drive down some country lanes which would have heated them up nicely and perhaps disformed one?

On a second note, my ABS and TCS light are on my dash and they are both inactive. VAG-Com says left hand wheel speed sensor, how I get to that? Where is it and what does it look like.

Sorry for all the Q's.

Any help appreciated guys!

Ross

Assuming you don't have brake pad warning indicators. The wheel speed sensor will be the item attached to a wire and plugged in to the front hub.

Any chance you have had wheel bearings changed recently ?

i had a similar (if not the same) problem a while ago.

when driving along sounded like it was squeaking once every turn of the wheel. Most noticeable about 30 MPH, although you could hear it at high speeds, it was drowned out by road noise. I found if you applied the brakes lightly, the squeak went away, but eventually returned.
I asked a mechanic friend, who said it was most likely due to a lip along the edge of the disk(s). options were to replace the disks, take the disks off and grind the lip off, or ignore the squeak and it would most likely go away.

I chose doing nothing, and sure enuff (after about 1k miles) the squeak no longer exists.

incidentally, i had a warped disk on my old car, it didn't squeak, but it would wobble every time i was braking!

Hi guys, thanks for the responses. I don't have brake pad warning indicator! Will take the disc off and grind the lip off tonight. Will try and also locate and have a look at the wheel speed sensor.

Thanks!

Problem solved! The hub had somehow worked its way out slightly by about a CM pushing the disc up against the caliper hense the squeaking / grinding noise. Hammered it back in using a block of metal to spread the impact and it's absolutely fine now. Didn't have to touch the hub nut as it all moves as one thing. Think it's the bearing that was coming out or summet. Sorted now anyway!

Something doesn't sound quite right here.

The bearing should NOT be able to move sideways at all when in the hub.

i would be doing some further investigation as to why it moved

Mine is doing the exact same thing, the bearing/hub seems to be slipping out. It did this before and I took it back to the mechanic that fitted the bearings. It seems to be doing this again so taking it to another mechanic to get his opinion.
