just cleaned the car... (spotless) drove ten mile come back and there seems to be black sut out my exhaust all over the back of the car... its done it twice now anybody else have this problem??... i do i have a air fuel mixture problem?... no lights on and drive ok just seems a hesitation when you put your foot fown? as if no power then after half a second or so kicks in?... annoying when pulling away as you need to wait for engine to catch up with your right foot lol...

Sounds like you have TDI with leaking intercooler hoses, check the i/c clips for tightness and the hoses for holes.

Sounds like your cat needs looking at sugar or you have a faulty MAF. Might be worth taking it to a garage and getting the emissions checked ? Quite worrying that nothing picked up in MOT

Sooty

Hi intersting theory about the CAT, I have a similar sooty problem but hadn't really though about the CAT.

I have an engine management light on and according to RAC unknown fault, but various garages point to oxygen sensor/lambda? no real affect on running of car though. I also have an unusal exhaust note, kind of crispy when given some stick. My mate thought I had been de-catted, but box is still there. Apperntly, you can knock the guts out of the cat with a bit of pipe and this adds performance and crispyness to you exhaust note. Can anyone confirm or deny this thoery?

I wonder if all these things are related, gutted cat, sooty noisy exhaust, lamda/oxygen sensor fault, slight delay on throttle response ?

no lol. no lights and i did an emmisions test boo :(. all came up ok but i still have this lag when you put your foot down. so what ever it is i think the soot and the lag are linked. and if it was the cat it would take ages for the c02 sensor to stabilise on emissions but it stabilises quickly. could an air leak before the butterfly (as is i cnt control) cause this soot as it is not qu*ite burning properly? yet still stay within tolerence for emmisions. or could it be a faulty sensor? :) . *(waits for boo to pick the answer out her lil head)

Would imagine its a faulty sensor then honey. I can see how an air leak can be responsible for your 'lag' issue but, not the sooty exhaust. Know anyone near you with VAGcom that you could run on your arosa ? I had a lag issue but, it was a combination of a hole in my cat and a dirty throttle body. Seemed to be fine afterwards but, still registers quite high on the CO2 emissions fast idle.

Madbsc, I cant imagine why anyone in their right mind would knock a cat about. Its a costly thing to replace. You can get 2 types one with a ceramic inner which, I can imagine if you do knock about will loosen the insides but, wouldnt do your car any good.

Also, alot of people will tell you that the Arosa isnt terribly reliable for warning lights. Apart from the fuel and temp ones I havent seen any others pop up on my dash (touches wood)

more lights

Hi apparently the first light to come was the Exhuast light which I presumed wrongly was engine management, well it looks like a little engine. This may tie in with the soot noise and such?

I looked up the Mass Airflow doohicky and some other comments and concluded that if the sensor was dirty this could cause some of my probs, over rich mixture/soot. I got me a can of Carbcleaner and a new airfilter, checked it was CAT friendly and cleaned, now I have EPC light as well as Exhaust light. I think I should have the full set by the end of the week. Ha I was hoping that all the lights would go off and all would be fine.

I think it is time to get it checked out wiv the garage, there goes another few quids.

The 'little engine' light is your engine management light - it's really a catch all warning light that comes on if you get a fault code thrown up! It doesn't mean anything specific.

spoke to midland vw today jodie.. (the legen) says that apparently all lupo and 1.4 16v arosa's (centre exhsust) models have a problem with sut build up if some one has bimbled roudn in the for ages as it builds up in the huge back box then when a little scally like me comes along n gives it a hoof full it just empties all over the back of my nice new car... but i am having a new exhaust soon so i will see if this solves that problem!... and the lag he is not shor eon i am taking it to him in 2 weeks and he will tell me weather its a 1.4 16v thing or its broke lol... anyone else on fly by wire on arosa having a slight delay between pedal and revs?

Yea, I'm still getting slight lag at low revs and the sooty exhaust.

I have read a few articles about dirty MAF sensor making engine run rich, so thought a tin of carb clean was worth investing in. In the examples on-line the MAF is right there in the air intake hose, not on mine. A bit more research later I find it is sometimes built into the carb body and the sensor/hot wire can be cleaned with a blast of carb cleaner.

I removed air filter give the carb blast of CAT friendly cleaner and it stopped, restarted it was a bit lumpy then cleared give it another blast and the EPC light came on. Oh S***! Best plan I thought get out there and give some stick to clear it and it did, engine seemed more responsive at lower revs and smoother. Next morning light EPC light comes on again.

I thought I had better get check done to see what's up, blimey P1166 Lamda, P0401 ERG, P1176 CAT, P0140 02 Sensor, P1553 Manifold pressure, P1504 Air Intake.

Have done some more research on-line still think it is MAF or ERG these seem to give low rev/tickover performance problems, UNLESS any of yu know different?

Help!

am i right in saying that 1.4 16v dont have a maf that have a tps sensor on the throttle body?.. and that if any of these were faulty a vagcom would pick them up. especilly if it ws running rich. this would cause an anomoly on the mot?. i have no performance loss only in that there is lag. could be anything from the pedal to the throttle body there are that many things it could be i think i will be taking the car to the man with the plan in bilsten. :)

tps

The fact that the 16v doesn't have a MAF would explain why I couldn't find it lol, I guess it was a stab in the dark with carbcleaner then!

I keep coming back to the EGR solanoid doohickey as the original fault, but now the EPC light is on or is the TPS? it's all going nuts. EPC light was on, then I gave it some stick it went of and all was fine, then later the car wouldn't even rev up, like no throttle as if the cable snapped. I know there isn't one! The car started and ticked over ok , but soon as I tried to rev it up it went lumpy missfiring and no throttle at all. Half hour later it starts ok and I give it some stick aroun the block the EPC light goes out, I pull in the drive and it comes on again.

Does anyone no of a private garage (not main dealer) in sheppey/Sittingbourne/medway that have expertise in VW/Seat and that wont replace all the sensors just because they can? Most that I have spoken to just want t replace stuff without thinking what is at the root of the problem.

I give up

I have given up trying to find the problem now, there are just to many variables. I'm taking it to the garage tomorrow hopefully they will sort it. I think I'll have to just stick to wash'n wax in future!

Black stuff continued

Hi all, a quick update about black stuff lights and tps'.

Took my car to B D Engineering (Newington, Kent if your down this way) they know what they're talking about! They were very thorough, two main things came to light, first lambda sensor wasn't picking up weak mixture and more interstingly the camb belt was two teeth out. The camb belt was changed about 20,000 miles ago, so it was like that when I got it. I didn't notice cause I'm used to the 1.0 which is a tad slower.

The car is much more responsive at low revs and mid range:D, so now when you push the throttle it goes. I still have a low reading on the EGR, but nothing to worry about.

I'm going to clean it tomorrow to see if the black stuff returns as:) quickly this time, hopefully now all that is sorted it will stay cleaner.

apparently the arosa 16 is renound for being a little sooty ne way and as for the lag i bought a brand fire new mondeo in the workshop today and that still had that same delay as miine so i think all 16v arosa's have a small delay but it the characteristic of the car :) anyone know where i can get tracking done as i cant do it at work :( "apparently its to low"
