Induction Kit - the basics

Hi all

I dont really know much about the mechanics and performance enhancements on cars so please excuse my ignorance in this area, but basically the LCR i bought last week has come fitted with a Twister induction kit.

I just want to know the advantages and disadvantages of having this in the engine instead of the standard air filter.

I still have the standard air filter and am thinking of removing the Twister and putting the original back in. This may sound stupid to some of you but i would be doing it for 2 main reasons: the lower fuel consumption (I understand that its higher with an induction kit. please correct me if i'm wrong though! or indeed if you know how much more it consumes over the original filter) and the other reason being for insurance purposes i.e. having declared that I have no mods.

Also if I were to sell the Twister second hand how much do you think I could get for it?

Hi mate,

I'd be surprised if the induction kit would worsen fuel economy. If the standard airbox is restrictive then fitting a free flowing induction kit should slightly impove economy.

I wouldn't expect much though and it would be interesting to see how the standard engine map would adjust to the improved air flow.

If you don't declare the air filter then you should ideally go back to the standard airbox and filter. Fuel consumption won't be affected by an open cone, but it is noisier and can suffer from heat soak from the engine bay unless you shield it well.

Yeah, go enclosed induction or if you have an open cone try and duct it well away from the engine to avoid it sucking in hot air.

Worth checking with insurers about the induction kit. Just ring up and tell them you are thinking about fitting one just to see what they say. If they start whining about it or start trying to charge you silly money then just stick the OE airbox and filter back on. If they are okay with it then leave it fitted.

It would be pretty harsh for an insurer to void your insurance in the event of a claim just because you didn't tell them about an induction mod. They would have to prove that the accident/claim was caused by the modification, which would be very unlikely.

Still its worth checking the matter out.

Off topic - where did you buy your motor from? Was it advertised as being totally standard but had a picture on the ad of the engine bay with the induction kit clearly visible? If so, I was keen to have a look at that motor but it was sold when I enquired lol!

Hope its a corker anyway :D

cheers for your help guys. i'll give my insurance a call and see what their verdict is. :whistle:

i bought mine in hertfordshire last week off a private seller. it did have a picture of the engine bay on the advert so probably not this one.

I still think that heat soak jibber jabber is overrated!
 
insurance wanna charge an extra £95 for the induction kit :(

That's a bit steep!

Insurance companies just try and con you in many cases....I was quoted an increase from 400 to 950 by my old company to have a remap on!!! They said 'it increases the chance of theft' FFS!!!!!!

hence I changed to Greenlight!

I would advise declaring it though if you keep it on....not worth invalidating your policy sadly.... (I declared my panel filter just in case! lol!)

sell it on - put a green cotton panel filter on (in the oem airbox) - technically it is an upgrade - but then so is changing to a different make of brake pads, or different tyres. These filters are the most free flowing and do not damage mafs unlike some oiled filters..

You'd probably find the same problem if you had an uprated cotton panel filter as well. The only good part (if I can say that) is that having lots of mods (remap, filter, strut brace, dv, etc.) doesn't increase the cost on a per item basis (the £95 or so will cover them all).

How much do you guys pay for the Green filter including vat, delivery etc? Everywhere I've seen they cost more than Jetex and they're the same thing (different colour).

I'm not really keen on cancelling the policy with them as i've only been with them for a week (bought the car last week) and so would incur an admin charge of around £40.

i asked if the £95 would cover other modications as well (as i have xenon lights and tinted windows too!) but they said they would probably mean a further charge.
