currently hull, then brighton!
Hi all,

thought i would let you know that my ATP GT28RS has finally died at the grand old age of a year, and 12000 miles (ish).

bent impellor spindle, collapsed bearings and a cracked housing.
all looked after correctly and installed proffessionally, and only completed 1 and a half track days so hasnt really been given that much of a hard life.

plus im on my second ATP inlet manifold as the first cracked open!!

its in the garage now having a brand new KKK Ko4s fitted to it, then im gonna sell her before i spend any more cash!!

anyone else had similar problems?

Pretty much everyone I've heard of with ATP stuff has suffered a blown turbo and cracked manifold, ATP quality and reliability track record is very poor.

Isn't your turbo repairable?

well yes, but to be honest it takes ATP so long to sort their parts out, when the manifold died it took them 2 months to get a replacement out, and wanted to see the old one first.
then the turbo took 3 months from order to supply, so i cant be arsed with them!

i will get the old turbo and sell it on for a few quid once the new one is on. someone might want to deal with them...but not me! :)

Get it repaired and get some hybrid treatment done where possible, i can only vouch for CR turbos.

Sorry to hear this!

To be fair, the bearing cartridge, impellor and coldside is Garrett manufactured............

what this guy said.......

Most turbocharger failures are a result of the tuning, not the turbo itself. Being a long time Garrett engineering partner, the most common failure we see is center section seals. If the seals let go first, the damage you describe is consistent with what we see. Calibration doesn't play a role in seal failure but the inlet oil pressure sure does.

I haven't seen many reports of failed elim's over here in the States but yes, their manifolds are notorious for warping, cracking and breaking. A few tuner shops have figured out how to make them last longer by adding relief cuts in between the runners at the head flange and by replacing all of the ATP supplied hardware with quality stuff.

This is the exact reason why our manifolds in our Stage 3/3+ kits are investment cast inconel. We are able to offer a lifetime warranty with our manifolds and we repair less than 1% of those sold to date.

I'm an APR man (remap) and your products are top notch, but they cost ubber bucks.:(

Thanks for your support! Yeah, there's no doubt that our products do cost more than the average. Alot of it has to do with our demands to only offer the highest quality. For example, take a look at the going rates for raw ss 304 vs. inconel. Do a little bit of research into investment casting vs. sand casting as well. I think you'll see its not the profit margin we apply but simply the highest quality materials and manufacturing processes we choose.

APR is not for everyone. There's no secret about that. We are best suited to the demanding enthusiast that just wants his car to work everytime with no headaches, warranty claims, downtime, additional labor, loss of use, etc.
