Car just failed its MOT :( got a bit of a list going on. The only point I'm not so sure about is the excessive free play at the steering wheel, it seems to be from the clamp that connects the steering wheel rack to the steering, it seems to be lose. I need to check with seat they gave me the right part.

Failed on:

  1. Steering system has excessive free play detected at the steering wheel
  2. Nearside Headlamp too low
  3. Offside headlamp too low
  4. Off side front brake hose excessively chafed
  5. Brake performance not tested(because it wouldn't go on the tester and because he didn't think it was safe to drive with point 4)
Advisory:

  1. nearside front front position lamp(s) slightly discoloured
  2. offside front front position lamps(s) slightly discoloured
  3. nearside front machpherson strut has slight movement at the upper attachment
  4. offside front macpherson strut has slight movement at the upper attachment
  5. nearside rear wheel bearing has slight play
  6. offside rear wheel bearing has slight play
  7. nearside rear brake pad(s) wearing thin
  8. offside rear brake pad(s) wearing thin
  9. nearside rear seat has been removed
  10. a smaller steering wheel has been fitted to the vehicle
  11. steering wheel top mount has slight play
  12. reg plate slights slight dull and discoloured
  13. nearside front ABS wire is coming into contact with CV joint
  14. offside and nearside rear brake host ferrules slightly corroded
  15. oil leak
  16. vehicle has been fitted with modified suspension all round

Ignore the ones in bold MOT man is scared of Vosa and getting stung so is being picky, except the rear seat that has to be listed.
Ones in italic are standard VAG within reason even new top mounts and rear bearings have play. Mr mot may not know it and wants his ass covered

Id be looking at the oil leak depending how bad it is
Id be suprised if theres play in the steering wheel top mount
probably sort the abs wiring rubbing if it is
check the rear pads but these do wear pretty slowly to be fair.

as for the steering spindle/joint/uj what ever you want to call it make sure the bolt it tight, if it is the splines may have striped, this happend to my mk2 golf, very easy to change/remove/check. just 2 bolts one around the pedals inside the car and the one where it joins the rack.

The oil leak has been there for over a year now, can't figure out where it's coming from at all. It's very slow though.

There is play in the steering its weird though it seems to be coming from the part that joins the steering column (in pic below), disappearing into the ether lol

The ABS wiring shouldn't be a problem

Aye I'm not worried about the rears for now

sounds to me like you could do with going to another garage and finding a friendlier mot tester!!!!
sounds like you got a right jobsworth on that test!!!!!

lots of things on that advisory list are utter bollocks,

maybe he/she is a new tester and is being a little too keen!

looks like even if your car had been a good'un they wouldnt have been able to do a brake test anyway as the car wouldnt go into their brake tester?!?!?!?!?!

I think you have probably found the most anal MOT tester there is.
I know in effect he is looking out for our safety on the roads, but looks a little excessive.
At least most the problems there are relativly easily and cheaply fixed

Sweet Jesus!!! Thats a bit of a severe list isnt it!! What a load of balls, I have never had any trouble with having a small steering wheel, and I cant believe some of those other advisorys, its a bit laughable isnt it ? Sports/Lowered suspension??!!! WTF! They wouldnt sell em if they werent legal or safe. I feel for ya mate, you definately got the short straw there, have you used him before??

Its a wonder hes still in business if hes like that on every test!, give his place a wide berth from now on and tell all your mates, all your mates of mates, and all your mates of mates relations to not go there!!

You get an advisory for having slightly discoloured plates, my car past its mot with german pressed euro plates on!

If hes like that with every car, I can't imagine many people go back!

Well steering and brake hose are all thats needed really so shouldnt be a massive bill.

All VAG's have slight play in the top mounts and bearings, mines got an advisory on rear bearings and it'll probably get the same advisory next year. It depends on how well the tester knows the car, take it to a dub specialist and half of those will vanish.

Mine will be going specialist next time but i needed a quick test.

I wouldn't do anything until it had been to another test centre. Some testers are just like that and nothing will be good enough.

I bought a car about a year ago which had failed it's MOT, and on the fail sheet one of the items was 'Horn sounds harsh'

Needless to say it was never mentioned when I got the car tested.

What rubish is that on the advisors? Aftermarket suspension...oil leak..what rubish I would have hit the roof if I had got that back a tester.
