TDi150 vs 225R Buying advice

AmD remap was £400 and that is their own remap, with their own rolling road and software (i.e. not a generic Revo chip). Takes about 2.5 hours and on mine, gave 311 lb/ft and 210 bhp circa. Even allowing for an overreading rolling road, they are decent figures.

The car's mid-range performance is transformed. The 150 does sound like the car for you.
you got 192.7 which is bloody good figures for a stage 1 remap.

Sorry, I stand corrected, I got 192.7 bhp. I knew it was in the region of 200 bhp, but it's willy waving at the end of the day - it drives well and was a significant improvement.

The figures are there for all to see, either way, I'm not hiding anything.

I have never driven a 225 but I have been out in one. I currently own a remapped 150 FR and my other car is a 1.8 is mx5 (partner's car). Previous cars have been a track clio, a couple of turbo'd cars and a Saab 900. I regularly drive a variety of other cars, for one reason or another.

........As for the 'left behind' comments, what, by half a second to 60 perhaps (assuming both of you are racing drivers, etc... etc...)? I've had drag races to 100 with LCR's and never felt like I've been embarassed. Quite the contrary as when they drive off, having 'just' beaten me, or not in some cases, they still have 20 mpg. I might have dropped to 35 perhaps.

Yes, it's not all about fuel consumption, but for what it does and what is on the market, I genuinely see no better alternative in this price range and yes, that even includes the LCR!

Driving a diesel, even a remapped one is boring compared to a petrol 1.8T IMO, that being my opinion it's not cobblers, it's my opinion.

Owning a pd150 or FR you will also have to live with the stigma you drive a 'lesser' model and it's a dirty derv.

Please do not take my previous post or this one as though I've taken it as a personal insult, I haven't.

The mx-5 comparison was with a revvy petrol engined car that was fun, not unlike a LCR but probably more fun I suggest. On that basis, it's a reasonable comparable to it.

How is that a fact, you certainly aren't saying that's your opinion, are you? That is cobblers, as I said.

Again, stating that he'll have to live with the stigma of driving a 'lesser model' and 'dirty derv', you are passing it off as fact. Is there really a stigma, as I've been to a few meets and I haven't seen it, personally. One of my father's cars is a 4.2 tdi A8 Quattro - is there a stigma attached to that, with a sub 6 second 0-60 time and better handling than a LCR and if so, where is the line? See what I mean, that's a daft comment.

At the end of the day, all comments in this thread are subjective and largely individuals bigging up their own cars. I was trying to be objective as I could and put the other side of the coin.

It's exciting for me to chase a LCR through the back roads in my 'boring' Tdi and not let him lose me... in my opinion.

Rolling road figures, I agree with you - read my posts again, as I say, it's largely willy waving. I will make up for the gain most LCR's have on my diesel in driving ability alone, unless you have the engine out on a dyno, a rolling road will not be particularly accurate.

As I say, for what this chap wants, the tdi seems sensible to me.

Not a bad play car, although the bhp/tonne would be under 200 I'd imagine. Second car I'd say get a diesel runabout in that case - you'll be just as frustrated in traffic in the LCR. Other mapping companies beyond AmD are P-Torque, Revo, Custom-Code, and some others we're not allowed to mention on the forum.

All i've done is an AMD remap and if the sun is out and the road is clear you will see a smile on my face!!

I pay £120 tax and £400 insurance get 28-32mpg around town and upto 45mpg on the m/ways.

The LCR boys are always hating on the TDI's :cartman:

I think the point people are making is the LCR is the better car. Does anyone buy a diesel for anything other than the more economic fuel use?

Most people buy the LCR (or ST, RS, R32, S3, Type-R, etc.) because it's an emotive decision and they're dying to own one.

In this case I think he should buy the derv becuase he's after a commuter car and you shouldn't need talking in to wanting one!

I like derv's!

Bought a TDi for the only reason that i like them, could have bought a petrol as i only do 10k a year and had enough money too but wanted to own one of the most powerful TDi hatchbacks.

well, according to lotus official the car weighs about 725kg, but i think thats optimistic....prob closer to 750, esp with the hefty standard exhaust & manifold in the bin....either way it doesnt weigh too much!

good to know about the re-map options. Any downsides apart from increased load on clutches & tyre wear?!

Ah ok - I thought it was similar to the VX220 at around 875kg - my bad. Have you decided on the TDI now? LCR clutch is fine up to a stage 2 map, but I think the TDI might start slipping with all that torque from low revs...

Maybe a faster car and a bit more capable but wouldnt say a better car,
to me a better car is a car that ticks all the boxes and does everything you want a car to do,
Quick,tunable,handles well,easy to live with,looks nice,cheap to run/insure/tax/repair/service etc.
A 150bhp tdi is very much capable car and deceptivly quick when you want it too.
If its outright speed you want then yes the LCR is the car for sure but the better car is the 150tdi to live with on the road ;)

Have owned both of them.

Was doing 20k a year so needed a derv. It was a brilliant car for what i needed, but always in the back of my mind was i should have got a LCR. I toyed with the idea of remapping my FR but i din't have the extra 1k lying about if the clutch went with the map.

Have recently moved into my gfs and i now have a 9 mile commute each day so i decided 'feck it' and went for an R. Have loved every minute of it so far, and can easily see 30+ mpg on my 4.5 mile drive to work if i don't play silly buggers, but whats the fun in that :drive1:

In summary: both brilliant cars, the LCR is faster, but that doesn't matter when your sat in traffic.

Depends really - I don't find it expensive to run compared to similar powered cars.

What you're saying is the TDI is a cheaper car so it's better?

i have recently bought a 55 plate fr+ and love it! i have driven diesels for 10yrs and wouldn't go back to petrol as i find them more reliable and obviously better economy wise. i am not a total speed freak but this car gives me what i want when required. i get just about 300 miles for £20 going to work and back, 50mile all round trip, motorway and the normal congestion so what can i say? i feel you want a bit of both so i would have to recommend the fr+. as for re mapping etc i am not interested as i have more than enough for my needs. your choice though! but choose wisely mate! good luck!

Ive had both of these cars,

in 2005 i purchased a brand new tdi fr 150, i loved the car to bits, had it for a year and a half, felt fast responsive and was awesome on fuel even when booting it..

But after a year of ownership being a petrol head i really missed the sound of a petrol engine and done a strait swap for the LCR i have now,

I have never regretted the swap as love my LCR to bits, However i do find driving to and from work i average 22-25 MPG and thats not booting it, (i drive in peak time traffic and over hills) but personally i believe thats a price to pay for a car that drives and feels like the LCR does.

I would say i found it easier to get the derv first and swap it for a LCR than to do it the other way as the diesel is a more preferd option i find for fuel economy and running costs.
