AGH on saturday my 1.2 2004 Ibiza engine decided to eat itself, a piston in the 3rd cylinder of the 3 cylinder AEQ engine cracked broke off and destroyed the entire excuse for an engine. The mechanic is telling me this is the disaster of all disasters and the only replacement 1.2 engine I can find 2nd hand is BME. does anyone know are they compatible or even similar. Im distraught lads any help would be gem!!!

Thank you

Alan

Drop a Hyabusa engine in it!

But seriously, try to get a hold of a Polo 1.2, i'm pretty sure they're the same engine?

Sorry to hear about your bad news, this does seem to be happening too much with these 1.2 engines - VAG should really be thinking about compensating people, actually all you folk that have experienced this and have documentary evidence of a full service history, should be forming a group and shafting Volkswagen/Seat/Skoda UK as its should be seen as their problem as they are the importers of all these cars. Maybe you need to sensationalise this failure - like dropping Auto Express a line, if that fails to get them to generate enough interest from reader then next stop should be Watch Dog - they like to make an example of arrogant manufacturers. You are feeling the pain why not let VAG's "good name" feel the strain!!

In the mean time, to help you get back on the road, talk to dealers (both VW and Seat) and see if swops are possible without needing to change anything - I'd guess that you will know the "A" engines were the first "lot" and the "B" engines were the next "lot" - maybe modified to meet newer EU emissions but also being more robust to minimise the chance of this happening again - also chat to Seat UK at Milton Keynes.

Today I rang SEAT Ireland, and they completly washed their hands of it to be honest im disgusted with it told me €2000 for engine and same for work. However mentioned that other 1.2 12v engines may be compatible. Claim to have no reports of the 1.2 12v being a soft engine.
