Rear brake calipers

After some advice replacing the rear brake pads on the cupra.

Iv swapped the front Brembos over along with the discs, but unsure on the rears as I have never worked with rear disc brakes before (only drums! )

I understand the pistons need to be wound back in, do I need a particular type? Iv got a 6 sided wind back cube.
A quick step by step would be awesome...

No idea what a 6 sided wind back cube is, but what you need is something like this....

You can pick them up from halfrauds for about £8-9

However there are other ways and means (i lost my tool, and used a gearpuller set intead lol)

As for actually changing the pads, it's an almost identical job to doing the fronts other then winding back the piston.

Oh and make sure the handbrake is off before you start lol.

Cheers Tutty, the windback cube is basically just a cube with different fitments on each side:

So hopefully one will fit... fingers crossed!

Im sure ill figure it out, thing is though, with the pads I got a bolt for each! When I go to do them ill probably find out why, but why do I need a bolt?

with my rear pads i recently changed i got 4 new bolts... theres 2 bolts on each rear caliper that hold it to the carrier.. as they have lock tight on.

Awesome, so you just replace the two bolts on either side then!

Did your cube work in the end mate as im about to change my rear brakes and need to get a wind back tool to do it. as i can see the cubes sell for about £8 but the other tools are £22ish

The tool forces against the other side of the calliper and aids the retraction, using the cube will mean forcing in against the pistion while turning it, if the cube had 3/8" square drive (it might have or is it 1/2"), then it could be used with the tool so that you could extend its use to cover a lot more models of rear brake callipers - just a thought!

Oh, and the tool can be used with the piston adaptor reversed and a thin piece of plywood to force back front pistons - and that can be quite handy sometimes as you will then be easing the pistions back in quietly and not just whacking them back in using a large pipe wrench etc.

Yeah the cube worked fine, I got mine for £3 on ebay.

Yeah, pretty straight forward, just held the calliper in one hand whilst I wound it back with the cube attached to a ratchet, didn't need to push it that hard either.

not sure what the cubes are like but if the piston is sticking a bit even using the better set it can be a right b&stard to get back in so worth investing if you plan on doing it a lot...
