Leon Service Schedule - Cambelt - Quick query

Hey folks,

I know the cambelt should be changed at 60k. However, is it 60k or 5yrs, whichever comes first?


Basically - If you owned an 03 plate Leon with 35k on the clock - would you change the cambelt? This mileage seems quite low to worry, but I think there is usually an age limit too, as it's only a piece of rubber..

What do you think?

Id like to know this also, i have a 55 lcr with 19k on. On the last service SEAT garage said it would need to be done on next service?. I have herd though.. these 20v engines are prone to go wrong if not done before or on the button of the milage.

cheers guys - thought that was the case, but I'm being told by some dealers that it's 60k only, and hence won't do it unless it hits the mileage.
To me, sounds like they are cutting corners to save on cost. I know I'd want it done.

had mine done at 90k (kilometers not miles)

the belt looked as new nothing wrong with it.

but you never can be too sure !!

thats the thing with the belt, you dont really know until its off.

I had mine done at even less miles, because it was overdue on age. just checked, 23000 miles, but 6.5 yrs!

if your dealers are saying this asking them for it in writting to get them to cover the cost if i goes before the miles what about £1500 plus to put right??? then see what they say lol

Just spoke to a SEAT dealer about a 2005 car on 54k miles who tried to tell me the cambelt doesn't need doing til 100k miles! If it's 4 years or 60k he can't argue it's not due either way surely :blink:

Just wondering - would a dealer warranty cover a cambelt going, particularly if I have it in writing from them that it doesn't need changing til 100k miles???

It used to be inspected from 60k service onwards and replaced at 120k with no time limit. This was changed to 60k/4yrs. Get it in writing that they will cover any cambelt damage, but when you ask him to do this I'm sure he'll find out what the actual cambelt schedule is...

Yeah I already asked them to go and double check. Think they're just trying to fob me off because I said I'd want it changing if I bought the car. Will be interesting to see what they come back with...

But remember depends on where the car has been kept or driven the 35,000 miles might be enough to warrant a change for some of the other parts that might go causing a massive failure, like the tensioner.
Also remember the OEM spec cars have plastic impellors not the uprated metal ones. Not a massive bill to change this but a PITA with a new car

Yeah, i'd get it done. My 2005 Fr TDi (35,000 miles) went in on friday for a cambelt and water pump change. Also had my brake fluid changed because i believe from the service book that it hadn't been changed before and should be done every 2 years.

I took mine to a VAG independant specialist and it cost me £315 all in.

Much rather pay for that now, than to have it go and have a huge bill later.

HHMMM, seems a bit too cheap to me.
