Windscreen

Just had my windscreen replaced as the old one's crack had almost reached the opposite side of the windscreen lol! The repairman had a NIGHTMARE getting the old one off, as it was apparently in too tight on one side such that he couldn't get a blade in there to cut away at the glue. In the end he ended up having to hammer around the sides and kick my windcreen out from the inside quote "the hardest windcreen i've ever removed in my career" lol!

So anyway he's put the new one in, and there's a gap at the top where the old one used to go really close to the surface, and the VIN number is only partly visible now due to the windscreen sitting a bit lower; with enough space around the sides of the screen to get it out should it need to be replaced.

My question is... is this normal? and will it be ok with a gap at the top, there is not seal there but he says it will be fine. Any pics of your windcreen from the top and near the vin? I'll upload mine in a bit

My only questions from reading your post are:

1. Was he using his spurs to cut the screen out?
2. Why didnt he shoot it out with his gun?

If you are not happy, get them to fit it correctly.

Thanks guys, I spoke to his boss, he said the screen should always be 1/4" away from the top, which it is, its about 1/3 of an inch away infact. Seems like Seat fit screens really close to the top of the frame as standard for some reason which makes them impossible to take out conventionally, they have to be brutally ripped it seems lol!

There is a seal it seems which is attached to the glass... it comes with a lifetime warranty so any problems and the repairman's going to be back with screaming the road down again lol

Looks normal to me at the top, however IMHO its a naff design as it picks up stone chips and rust

surely if you cannot read the vin number than the screen is fitted incorrectly, there is a window there for a reason, i wouldnt be accepting that.

no they fit them so that the vin is visiable in the window, in other words correctly, did the screen fitter have the specs from seat as to how far away from the frame it should be??? or was he just quoting a number off the top of his head

You can still make out the Vin, the screen slightly covers the top of most of the characters but they are easy to see if u look at it from the right angle. I know that the old screen made it blatently obvious to read the VIN, but it doesn't seem to be doing any harm. And as for the fitter I have no idea if he had any specs sheet, his boss said that no screen should be fitted close to the top of the frame; that there should be a gap.

I've had 3 new screens on my LCR, VIN has always been readable, never had a problem getting them out, always been a gap at the top and the LCR's had a big problem from supply with cracking at the bottom corners, usually from the drivers side

not sure about that I'm afraid.....

Just had mine done by autoglass and the guy had it done in 25 mins. came out easy as anything.....

just looked at those pics...that looks way too low at the top in the second pic mate..... mine comes level with the plastic trim on the A pillar....

Yes, I would say its at least 5mm, if not more too low, get it redone properly.

Thanks for the reply guys, I'll take some measurements of the exact distance tomorrow, and call up the company again. Is there any harm in the windscreen lying a bit low? It really was a b*itch to get the old one out it wouldn't budge at all, even I tried pulling the cutter as I'm bigger than the guy who came.... I couldn't move it at all!

Hi guys, just took measurements, the gap is exactly 1cm, or 3/8 of an inch. The fitter said it should be 1/4 of an inch gap, so he's close, only 1/8 of an inch out, I think that 1/8 of an inch would make my vin more visible ( I can read all of the digits looking up at it from an angle but not as obvious as before) , but is it really worth the effort to have the fitter out again for the sake of 1/8 of an inch?
