http://ratrod.photoblog.co.uk/ for all pics but for a quick (ish) catchup i guess i better start at the beginning huh ?

This is an old idea of mine i always wanted to do since i was knee high and having been bought up with mk1 escorts and cortina's ford pops and dragsters etc i guess i've always been old skool and love the old ratty rod stuff

Out walking the dog one night i walked past the local rockabilly's garage that my old man over the years had done tons of flathead engine parts for and decided to pop in for a nose around and see what he was doing at present when after a few beers and a 3 am finish helping him drop a '34 body on i ended up with this '27 model T roadster body as a return of favour

much to my mum's delight blocking up her driveway :) but i eventually got it home and as my garden is fully enclosed i have to get all parts through the front door and through the house so i laid it to rest on the back patio and sat back wondering what the hell i am going to do with it

725045000355.jpg
731045000355.jpg

After a few calls and deals and silly promises and too many late nights in strange garages earning favours i acquired some bits for my new baby - Ford Cortina subframe/axle + Rover P6 3.5 V8 Engine and autobox

613045000355.jpg

So the whole thing started off right there on the patio with a few ill placed items and idea's that mainly sat in my head and even though safe up there, in all honesty it was complete unknown chaos :)

Started off with a home made frame that after watching 'American Hotrod' and reading 101 magazines and web pages etc looked easy, always does 'look' easy of course and i had the advantage now of a few friends to bend ears on and call for help etc so i started off with vigour going for a self made 'broken back' style that i had seen a pic of years ago

817045000356.jpg
805045000356.jpg

By now i have made the patio bigger and of course run out of room so migrated to the decking, well whats left of it anyway

837045000356.jpg
842045000356.jpg
845045000356.jpg

Then the real wierd stuff started in my head along the lines of my own styled manifold, mainly as i hate Rover engines for being ugly and through disgust that i missed out on a Daimler Dart 250 V8 by £20 as i was too late getting home :(

I started with the latest range rover manifold and proceeded to chop it all up to get what i wanted, in hindsight next time i think i'll just make one

all this hard work made me decide maybe i needed something that was properly straight to start off with chassis wise in reality so at least it had a chance of being driveable so i wandered off down the local scrappie and fell over this Reliant Scimitar

promptly ending up thanks to a plasterboard saw and a big hammer into a smaller more manageable chunk of metal

This looks like its going to be an interesting build looking forward to seeing it finished. Always had a soft spot for hot/rat rods. One thing bugging me tho how will you get it out of garden when its finished:confused:

dragging it's sorry butt down the workshop for a weekend of cutting grinding and cleaning up

started to look a bit more respectable

eventually using my young daughter a borrowed astra van and a sack truck it manages to make it's way home through the front door and rest where it was intended for , and not a bad fit either

after a quick non starter with the cortina subframe after seeing one in action at santa pod nationals i stripped it back some more and decided to make my own suspension with a bit of help from a cortina subframe acquired previous and the caterham workshop manual

Started to get sick of the big clumsy 'everyone else does it' front Cortina suspension so decided by accident to use a modified Vw Beetle front axle. I say modified but more an accidental picture of using it shortened / thinned / back to front / upside down sort of way

Whilst the now planned properly plates were being laser cut it was time to start dropping the motor in

a quick mock up now and then does wonders for ideas etc

bearing in mind this is a stress relief for me so taken 2/3 years already as i just leave it there until i get a wind up me and just get stuck in to it for a night or a weekend, sometimes leaving it for months on end not even touching it. tonight i treated it to a shelter at last ::)

there's a huge chunk in the middle of many tried and failed ideas so i wont bore you all with them, just wanted to get it down safe somewhere.

if you want the warts 'n' all pics feel free http://ratrod.photoblog.co.uk/

and to answer the 1st and only questions i ever get about it being in a small enclosed garden - once finished it will all be stripped again and removed the same way it all came in but as it will be finished all the bits will be sent for paint / powder / chrome + recon etc and a long weekend or so in a proper workshop to refit knowing it will all go together without a big hammer i hope

that is if it ever leave's the garden of course but for now it gives my brain summat to do

when the mrs suggests the newly erected (huge 'n' cheap) gazebo for the weekend as she's fed up of draining the rain off the cover then you realise she either wants it done or me out the house

either way it's time to look keen again :p

off this weekend with hope of making mounts and bolting in the jag rear end

Rolled out of bed later than planned this am, but having already done my ibiza door handles in the dark i decided i was in credit and deserved a lie-in.

Started off sorting out some bottle brackets on a sack truck i promised a mate of mine for ages then on to the rear lights for the Ibiza that were playing up after i ripped me out for some pics for CEY_CLS, god bless mk2's huh

realised the body is way too wobbly keep moving about on and off so sprayed up all the lines white for ease of spotting damage and cracks then set to bracing it up a bit care of some batons from Wickes so i can start cleaning it all up a bit, got carried away on bulkhead and looks pretty good in the white

Had a little play with some stencils i have been making, gave the kids something to do as well as they seemed to like doing some legal graffiitii

Dropped the body back on and sat one of my sprogs (the youngest one who likes to get oily ) and took some profile pics for my imagination and later, i hope, windscreen design and height
