hi guys used the search bar but couldn find definitive answers!! anyway my question is why would you want to remove or blank the egr valve? what improvements would it make?

also i seen that you can just turn i dwn on vag-com so what thathabout??

and las but not least i seen a pos that said removing the egr valve means removing the anti shudder valve and the post said that without the anti shudder valve the engine will rev into self destruction so surely i better to keep the egr correct? or at mos just turn it down??

thank you just very confused about his egr stuff!!!

well re:the 1.9 model it's main aim is to stop the crap forming in the egr/inlet manifold, there is no added horsepower to be had but it may make things smoother, turning down with vag-com is helpfull with early versions but may be of doubtfull use on later models, blanking if you have ECU v15 is OK but will give a CEL light on V16 approx My'04 on? most folk can't wait to rush out and spend money but if your handy with tools you could just do a "Wingnut" stealth pipe this will keep the antishudder if you wish, however whether it has ever stopped a runaway I should like to know. here endeth the lesson :banned:

well i have an 06 fr 130 which has been mapped and had a few oher mods!! is there any chance that the egr could break it cos i could turn it down myself so if that is just as worth while il do it but dont know whether i wanna risk removing or blanking it just in case things go pete tong

Hot sooty exhaust gas meets oily crankcase breather fumes resulting in nasty black toffee that slowly chokes the inlet manifold. Here's what one TDI-club American found when he cleaned out his 1.9 TDI.

EGR works by reducing the oxygen content in the inlet charge, making more soot. EGR is the reason for the puffs of soot seen at traffic lights and on the motorway when diesel drivers put their foot down.

In high-mileage cases the EGR valve itself can get stuck open with this stuff, causing limp mode at overtaking speeds on the motorway, brown trouser moments and much cursing.

Defeating the EGR at the earliest mileage possible will reduce or prevent this. Earlier ECU firmware will not detect the disconnection of the N18 valve, but later versions (2004 or thereabouts?) will throw up an ECU error light. VAG-com is the best answer for these, turning the EGR quantity down to its minimum setting. Blocking the actual pipe between exhaust and inlet can also work, but a bleed hole is needed on later ECU's.

Replacing the crankcase breather with an oil catch can will also help, by cleaning the oily fumes.

Aftermarket suppliers will sell you an EGR eliminator, a straight pipe which replaces the EGR assembly. The antishudder valve is part of the EGR assembly, so you lose that as well.

The antishudder valve is mainly there to make the shutoff of the engine smoother by choking the airflow at shutoff to quench any tendency to run on. In the unusual case of a worn engine running away by consuming its own oil through the breather, the antishudder valve offers a last-ditch hope of choking the engine before it destroys itself.

Generally americans seem to get worse intake clogging due to there exhaust coolers apparently. My 132000 mile ibiza inlet only had a light film of oil and looked as if it had never been removed.

Sigh

it depends on whether you must have instant goodies now! ++20BHP!! Pull the skin off several rice puddings!!! or are interested in taking action that will benefit you in 2, 3 or 5 years time. If you do nothing the inlet manifold will slowly choke up and strangle performance - it did on my old TDI 90 Ibiza, hitting limp mode after about 70K miiles.

It isn't a lot of work, unless you leave the manifold until it's clogged. Low mileage car, disconnect the N18 electrical connector, or use VAG-com to turn it down if you have a later ECU, or put in a blanking plate (2 screws, replace the gasket in the EGR pipe with a metal plate). My car is early enough that I can get away with just unplugging the N18 - I use duct tape to seal off the exposed plug and socket so that I can reconnect it for servicing. It had 30K on it when I bought it, and I don't expect any limp mode issues over its lifetime (it's just passed 60K)

Tend to agree with Mutley................I got a 110 at 40K & immediately stopped the EGR from working by using one of those mini hose claps that we used to use in school science lessons....think I did find a slightly better response once the engine had warmed up. Its now done over 80K & the only Limp mode I've had was in relation to the MAF at about 50K & at odd times due to "Over boost" if I haven't "exercised" the vanes in the turbo for a few weeks but just using it "local" but thats another story.

Not just americans get it this is on my 118k Leon 110 TDi from when I removed my EGR

My Intakes the same im going to strip it off, and totally gut it out...

I dont suffer any performance issues at all but know it must be holding back airflow or something

blanked off my egr with a plate, and moved the breather down to near the battery
car seems noisier and less smooth than before, seems to be doing more to the gallon though

You are right it won't mak any differnce at all.
Only way on later cars is to blank it off but put a 5mm hole in the plate if you dont want the check light on.
