Engine's cutting out on my Tollie

Mk.2 Toledo 20VSE. Can anyone advise please?

Pulling into the car park today and the engine just cut out. No warning, no untoward noises, no nothing.Turned the key to restart and nothing. It wouldn't even crank/turn over.

A kindly gentleman and myself pushed it out of the way. I got back in, turned the key and it fired up first time.

It's done something similar only once before, when I went to start it and it wouldn't crank. Turned the key again, and it was fine.

Any ideas/advice/experience of similar problems?

Any help will be much appreciated.

I had a problem with this when the car go to temp it would cut out

let it cool for 5 mins and was fine but as soon as it hit temp again it died

for me is was the Crank Sensor (Engine Speed Senor)

fixed it and no problems since

Thanks for that.

I thought it might be ignition, engine management or immobiliser-related.

Makes sense, as I've noticed the tick over has started to become slightly erratic now and again, plus it had been running for about 30 mins when it happened; so the engine was warmed. Might just be the problem.

At least it gives me a place to start.

Much appreciated:cheers:

Yep, I thought it might be the MAF too, as others have experienced (sort of) these symptoms with a failing MAF.

Whipped it up to the garage (fortunately, they've got a VW/Audi specialist there). The diagnostic threw up a couple of undeterminable issues, so they reset it back to the factory defaults to clear them. Test drove it, and all seemed to be okay. Picking it up tomorrow, so with luck they've cured it.......apart from the fact that because they disconnected the battery they've buggered up the stereo coding, so now I've got to reset all that..... :banghead:

Well I hope it's sorted. Only thing with the MAF is it doesn't always throw up fault codes and you can have good days and bad. When mine went a few years back now it was me that suggested a faulty MAF to the Seat garage. After testing everything else they eventually changed it and all was good.

MAF's are funny things. Bit hit and miss. I'll bear what you said in mind, in case it cuts out again (just hope I'm not doing 70 down the motorway!)

All seems to be okay for the moment, although the bloke who did the job has locked my stereo into 'Safe' mode, so it's an umpteen hour wait to see if it clears itself.......[:@]

Simple

Sounds simple but try disconnecting your battery for half hour, I had a similar problem and tnhats all I needed to do funnily enough

Sound advice and thanks. That might work with the stereo. Just tried it after three hours and it's still in 'Safe', so I'll leave it over the weekend and if that's not long enough, nothing will be. Will try your suggestion then. If that fails, will have to whip it up to the Seat dealer.

Just hope I'm not looking at a new stereo now. My previous car (not a Seat) gave three attempts at the code. After the third try, if you still got it wrong, it locked you out permanently.

Obviously a bit cheesed off..... and all because the bloke who dealt with the original problem never read the manual clearly and keyed in the wrong code......twice.:censored:
