1.9 tdi cupra or 1.8 20v t cupra

hello. am looking into getting a cupra but im really can't make my mind up on which of the cupra's to choose! can people please tell me the advantages and disadvantages of the two cars?

Tell us what sorts of driving you do and mileage you might be covering in a year! Diesel will make more sense if you are doing big mileage.

having driven a 1.8T (octavia) in different states of tune and owning a PD160 Ibiza; if you're doing enough miles a year to justify a diesel then get the PD160, otherwise it's 1.8T all day every day IMHO

well a don't do alot of miles so the petrol would make more sense. Is there any big difference in running costs/tax/insurance?

tax is more for a petrol cos of the higher carbon emissions. running costs i think is down to which fuel it is. i think they're both the same insurance group edit: yeah both group 15 according to Parkers.co.uk

1.8t can be expensive to run if your driving is "spirited". tax is £220ish a year from 2006 onwards. dont know about diesel. insurance wise just get some quotes.

Tax for my 07 Cupra is £170
My insurance is alot higher than a diesel cupra, £300 higher and the Average MPG I'm getting at the moment with motorway miles is about 35 maybe less.

If I were you I'd be looking at a Diesel to be honest, if you can put up with the fact the engine is quite loud you'll be ok. I went from a 1.9TDI to a Cupra 1.8T and I really miss the economy.

people say if your only doing short journeys then get a petrol but thats not true, Short journeys or long Journeys I still had about 600 miles to a tank. now I get 280 if that!

My 04 diesel costs me £145 tax but insurance is dear. economy is so so but where i love it is the torque. Goes like the proverbial off a shovel past 1800 rpm all the way to the limiter. Watch for torque steer especially in the wet. Noisy tyres and hard suspension especially around town. Oh yes and watch your speed. i can poodle at 30 in 4th but with a slight press I am off and away doing 50 in a few seconds. Use decent fuel be aware that the rear washer pipe can come off in the cold.

...isn't as smooth, sounds like a tractor, smokes, covers the rear of the car is soot, isn't as much fun cos it's not worth revving much past 4000rpm...

if work hadn't moved from around the corner to 50+ miles away I wouldn't have considered the TDI version

although i do think the vag diesel range is probally one of the best diesel engines out there.
i also think the 1.8t is also an excellent engine which is as hard as nails fast tuneable and sounds great and is fairly easy to work on.

I'm lucky to get235-240 from 1 tank. But I very rarely do any motorway driving..

Welcome to the world of Derv Haters.
Never had smoke as I used millers.
It didnt sound like a tractor.

I never got much soot, nothing that a once a week wash down wouldnt sort out and after a remap it was smoother than my standard 1.8T and revved all the way to the end of the limited which i think is 6k.

At the end of the day mate a 1.8T is a great car
The 1.9TDI is also a great car,

If you do short distances, Dont mind paying more on tax AND insurance and are looking to stay petrol then the 1.8T is for you.

Do anything over 150 miles a week, Dont mind that it sounds different, Looking to save on the tax and insurance and save on fuel costs get the derv.

Diesel all the way. Cheaper tax/insurance and better economy and because of the great torque these engines produce it feels just as fast as the 1.8t anyway. oh and theres the average life expectancy which is alot higher in diesel's which means should have better resale value aswell >:)


But honestly you should just go test drive both of them see which one you like the most then buy that one. some people prefer the higher revving petrol and some people prefer the shorter more intense serges of power in the diesel :s

I've got a PD130 and bought a FR 1.8T last week, think it comes upto personal preference as mentioned above, i LOVE the torque on the diesel and although the 1.8T is fast, it doesn't "feel" as fast as my PD130 (although it probably is)

another factor that swayed me to keeping the PD130 is the amount of mileage I do, I can drive the PD130 fast and still get a good return on MPG but drive the petrol fast, it doesn't help my wallet at all.

I'm 19 as well, so insurance is another big factor.

call me whatever names you like it doesn't change the fact that I drive a remapped diesel Cupra every day of the week, I'm not just going on prejudice or what I've been told. it's my opinion based on my experience

mine should have a hybrid turbo within a month but in all honesty if I wasn't looking at the commute, I'd have a petrol turbo :(

My dad owns a remapped Octavia vrs, it's ace to drive - but the diesel is better economy by a long shot, it gives you a bigger punch when you accelerate - as madfaz says it feels quicker and i personally love the smoke! (This is all judging from my 130tdi so i'm assuming the 160 Cupra will be a hoot!) The diesel won't handle quite as well as the petrol and definitely won't be as smooth, but for both engines performance will be transformed after a remap. It just depends what you want out of the car really and whether you are bothered about the fuel/insurance costs etc
