Black Smoke!

Hi, I was driving on friday and all of a sudden I seemed to loose power and noticed a worrying amount of black smoke coming out of the exaust. I could barely keep up to 20mph. So pulled over to check for loose turbo pipes etc all seemed fine. Called the AA out and it was showing up as a egr valve fault. I dont know much about this but the guy at the garrage where I was towed to, said it could cost between £100- £200 to replace and there was also the possibility of it being the turbo itself... is this a reasonable price to replace the egr valve?

Nearly forgot the car is a TDI FR

Hmm I've never done it myself but I'm pretty sure most people here get rid of the EGR entirely.
I'm sure someone with alot of knowledge will be along in a minute that will know alot more than I.

Yep the EGY Bypass is a good Mod alot of people do it ! IIRC allard do a bypass Kit for the PD130

Price?

Thanks for the replies, what would I gain from removing the EGR? How much would I be looking at? also does anyone know the that quote of £100 - £200 is realistic for the garage to replace the EGR?

the EGR bypass is about 60 quid i think, it basically stops exhaust gasses being recirculated back into the engine, so its always running on clean fresh air, the downside, is you will need to get the EGR mapped out of your ECU as it will bring up a fault and bring on an engine warning light. Not to sure about the EGR valve price, its maybe worth taking it off and giving it a really good clean out as they clog up, it may just be a case of it being stuck, hope this helps

Thanks will this give me any performance gain? I have found the bypass part but where/how can I get it mapped out?

Most probably, im no expert though lol, and probably have to goto someone like revo, P-torque etc, probably better off giving them a ring and see what they can do for you matey

you shouldn't actually have to have a map change for the egr replacement valve. I changed mine after i had already had the big turbo fitted and i didn't change the map for about 2 months. in terms of gains your really not going to notice much of a difference but it's more about not chucking the hot gas back into the system. It's well worth doing and you can get an egr replacement pipe from e-bay at the moment for like 50-60quid and it's easy enough to fit yourself from memory its just 4 allen key or torque bits then it fits straight on, you will prob beed to get the sfs boost pipe aswell because the clips from your standard hoses won't fit onto the egr replacement pipe. cal up sfs and ask for the golf mk4 boost pipe and it's ALMOST a straight fit you have to chop a bit off the bottom end of it but you just need a sharp stanley knife.

p.s my egr broke just after i had the remap done. Luckily it was under warrenty BUT i drove around with it like that for a couple of weeks and the turbo started making a screaching noise and it covered my engine bay in thick black soot so if poss i wouldnt drive it around.

Sounds identical to the issue I had, when I took mine in they told me new turbo, hope its not the same problem for you.

Just out of interest how old is your car?
