R32 Vs LCR

Back from the dead
When Clarkson reviewed the Mk5 R32 on TG against a BMW 135i Msport he was giving it large about the R32, saying it was fast, grippy, brilliant, better than the Beemer etc....

On the strength of this we went to see a new Mk5 R32 before we bought the S3, and the dashboard plastics were pretty nasty, for a VW it felt cheap. When we drove it there was plenty of tune but strangely there just wasn't the pace to go with the noise. Don't get me wrong, the S3 is no bomber from factory, and needs a couple of grand throwing at it to make it sharpish, but I passed a 3.2 V6 Audi A3 on track at Combe last year and it just couldn't keep anywhere near.....well almost anything.

People often bang on about how much more powerful the VR lump is than most 3.2 V6 cars (250PS), but the Nissan 350Z V6 was pushing out over 300bhp towards the end of its life so it's not groundbreaking.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a bad car, there are many many worse out there. In Mk5 guise it lost its road presence, and in my mind its way a little. I'd have had a Mk2 Cupra over the Mk5 R32 in the blink of an eye. It's no coincidence it will be replace by the R20T.

going by VW owners knowledge (or lack of), i've come up with this formula:

skoda a poor mans seat
a seat is a poor mans vw,
a vw is a poor mans audi?....
then the audi a poor mans porsche?
porsche a poor mans lambo?
lambo a poor mans bugatti veryon

this quote made me chuckle

My mate owns a Cupra R 225, we raced on an airfield, both in 4th gear, about 60mph... 3 horn beeps and foot flat to the floor to about 110/120mph. I was a good car length infront of him!

of course it would pull away , even on top gear when they had that evo fq400 against the slower car and the slower car won in 4th or 5th gear from 0 (cant remember slower car make) , at 60 in forth the turbo will hardly spool

I looked at the R32 when i was looking to buy a new car, purely because of its looks (i love the way they look), but i just couldn't warent the extra money it would cost me to buy, maintain and run the R32, i ended up buying my LCR for 3500pounds less than the R32 (ok it was an older 21bhp model) but i can safely say i made the right decision, i love my LCR. Does everything I want it to do and has all the toys aswell. And even standard before i had it remapped it ate Golfs on an open stretch of dual carrageway (please note, no stupid speeds). It is not chavish in anyway, looks lovely and i would have to agree that the base model gold GTi's etc rolling around with big wheels, big exhausts and body kits look far chavish and far more common on the roads aswell.

I wouldn't swap............
