TDi Sump & Plastic guard

The sump plug on my TDi Cupra is loose, it tightens to the top but wont go really tight resulting in slight oil leak and the suspicion it'll probably work itself loose.

Took the car to Seat who recon its basically ****ed and will need a new sump! I dread to think how much this'll cost me, so do you guys have any idea on what I can do. And if I have to buy a sump is there anywhere I can get it cheaper (i'd imagine most scrappies would only want to sell a whole engine).

Also, the plastic guard that lives under the engine that protects it from crap coming up off the road, mine has been knackered since I got the car and finally gave up its temporary makeshift securings. The price for a new one - £130!!!!! Again, does anyone have any ideas as I'm loathed to pay this much for a bit of plastic.

I'm pretty sure you can buy kits that allow you to re-tap the sump for a larger plug size - that would be a cheaper option for sure.

Have you tried a scrap yard for a replacement undertray?

Yep, start off with the correct size tap and have a go at running it through to clean up the existing thread, (be careful of the swarf as you don't want this inside the engine)

If that doesn't work then go for the next size up and a one size larger sump plug and sealing ring.

This begs the question of who cross threaded your sump plug??????

Have you tried fitting a new sump plug?

They come with a 'washer' as part of the sump plug, which deforms when compressed to make a 'good' seal. If you/they have tried reusing an old sump plug, then the washer will not perform it's job correctly.

You should always fit a new sump plug (£2) when you remove it for whatever reason. They're not re-useable ;)

I've 'risked' reusing an old one in the past, but have always checked a day or so later to check for leaks ;)

For £2 it's not worth the hassle though normally, but I normally forget to buy one when I buy the oil/filter... and can't then be arsed to drive the gf's car back to GSF/Seat to get one mid-job !!!
