On the way home today I noticed I am getting a lot of black smoke out of the back of the Ibiza, I'm sure it wasn't like it over the weekend! The tail pipe is much blacker than usual too.

Its just about got 40k miles on the clock and a scan with vag com shows no faults at all in the system and it still pulls hard with no hesitations.

I did get very very low on fuel over the weekend probably had to do about 20 miles with the 0 miles to refuel thing showing!

I was wondering if it was any or all of the following:
a. its likely to be a batch of dodgy fuel
b. there was some crud in the bottom of the tank that got sucked in when the fuel got low
c. its just not loving the heat
d. boost leak
e. faulty MAF
f. borked turbo

Anyone else had any extra smoke today?

I found that when I didn't use millers I got loads of smoke (After using it... to not using it)
Also punting it where before It had all warmed up properly.

I just filled up at the nearest station as I didn't have much choice and that was a tesco! It was definitely warmed up today driven about 20 miles! Its deffo black smoke and its most seen under heavy throttle pulling away from junctions etc.

If you normally use Vpower, Or Normal diesel with millers.
When you move back to normal derv you will end up with lots of smoke. Not harmful.
After a day or so of running the normal fuel type it will be fine again :)

Just been out and had a look at the pipes and checked the oil level again. It was serviced 6500 miles ago and the oil has gradually fallen from the top of the hashed level on the dip stick to near the bottom of the hashed area but not off of the bottom as per previous services.

Do these pics imply turbo oil seal failure or is that a normal amount of leakage?

Just done some VAGCOM logs after a quick word with Jim at SJB in Basingstoke and I'm pretty sure this confirms his diagnosis of MAF failure....

Check out the peak MAF reading of 1250 below, no wonder I get smoke if it is actually only sucking in at the specified 800!

Put a brand spanking new MAF on and just been out for a run, its exactly the same on the vagcom log as the old one so I assume that must be correct incase anyone is ever looking for the info in the future...

I think those graphs look pretty normal. If your MAF is reporting a flow of 1250mg/sec that's pretty healthy.

The guys on the chiptuners forum have picked up some faults in the boost / MAF charts which points to a boost leak between the turbo outlet and the intercooler.

The pipe that goes in the top of the intercooler doesn't look quite all the way home but I can't see for sure unit I strip it down this weekend.

I know some black smoke is normal but this is more like a smoke screen! mpg has also dropped by 6 -> 8 mpg.

New boost hose fitted from the top of the intercooler to the rigid pipe and now the smoke seems to have stopped! I'm gunna run another vagcom log tomorrow to see how different the readings are without a leaky boost system

Did you ever run Vagcom again and was the boost leak the problem? I got my car remapped a couple of months ago and it wasnt hitting the correct bhp for the torque it was putting out and i suspect the leak you had is the same problem for me too, (well i hope it is....). Noticed oil leaking from it a few times when cleaning and when i was down ordering a new hose today luckily i looked under the bonnet again because the hose was near hanging off ffs.

Did you notice is your performance any better? My bhp is down around 10 but my torque is near enough bang on for the map i got. Was it just the lower rubbery hose you replaced? Sorry for all the questions i'm just in two minds at the moment to replace both hoses were the leak is or just the rubber onw.

Noticed a slight increase in performance, mainly at low revs.

I only changed the rubber hose which went from the top of the intercooler to the rigid pipe. I took all the others off and checked the lugs and they were ok.

Have you poppped the pipe off and had a look at the lugs to make sure they have failed?

Na mate havent taken them all off yet, (its doing a good job at attempting to come off all by its self lol). Was looking into one of these first. Think this may solve the problem alright...tho in red ofcourse:-
