I read the workshop guide on turbo removal lastnight and it looks a bit involved for my amateur spanners and sockets!

It spoke of drive shaft removals to get to oil return pipes to the sump (pic shows the return pipe with drive shaft removed) :-

.........some precautions about ensuring that on refitting you put some engine oil into the turbo's "oil in" pipe:-

"Fill the turbocompressor with engine oil through the oil supply pipe connection before fitting the oil supply tube"

........and to renew all locking nuts and bolts, plus all gaskets.

I was going to use this INNOTEC stuff............if you do a search of the TDI forums using INNOTEC there is a bit of info on it......................I was going to get my kind service man to do it as he had used it on a number of other customers cars & they found it works well...certainly cheaper than a new/recon turbo & the labour in removing & replacing.

However, I declined his offer because I had taken advice from within these forums in how to Exercise the VNT turbo Vanes & over a couple of months it improved it greatly.....never had a "Limp mode" & found acceleration from standing/slow speed increased as well. When I didn't do the exercising for a month & only did local/short journeys............the next time I accelerated up a hill it went into limp mode........so I regularly make a point of going via a local long steep hill accelarating hard up it. (although I still don't think I've got the knack of how to completely get the vanes through a full cycle using this method !)

Removal of drive shafts hahahahahahaha no need to do that **** lol
The turbo comes out from the top!!
Remove the intake manifold and egr, remove the oil return pipe via the 19mm compression fitting to the block, remove pipes and exhaust down pipe, remove the exhaust mani bolts and struggle like a fuka for 10 mins to wiggle it out.

remove the bolts holding the two parts of the turbo together, mark it up first though so that the turbo goes back together in exactly thr same place.

Careful when seperating the two parts as the variable vains have 3 tiny pins which by my reckoning are placed in there to make you loose them as they fall out lol!

Refit in reverse!
