EGT sensors

just before I take the plunge and buy one of these can someone confirm in Lamans terms (but without sarcasm if possible ) what they actual do and how important they are to change straight away.

Basically I have a fault showing as the EGT sensor, I have mentioned it in another thread but i just want to focus solely on this bit now. Is it something that could be just a loose connection or more so something that will be just nakered

One thing for sure is that when the fault code is cleared the car idles rough as a badger as it isn't used to running as normal.

The EGT sensor does what it says on the tin, it measures the temperature of the gases coming out of the exhaust into the turbo.

Many K04 turbos don't actually use these so I'd have to question its usefulness. I too have had issues with mine but typically when I took it in to be looked at the bugger wouldn't play up.

Get it properly diagnosed before you just go replacing the sensor! At around £150 it's not cheap!

Have had it on Vagcom and the fault reads EGT Sensor - Closed Circuit

now to me that would indicate if the circuit is closed it should be fine but it seems to mean it's nackered. As I say with the fault in the car runs fine as the ECU has adapted to it, clear it for a second though and it's terrible

Closed circuit means that the sensor is showing zero resistance/reactance rather than giving a reading proportional to the temperature. Either the sensor is knackered or the wiring has worn through and is short-circuiting in the leads or the sensor connecting plug-and-socket.

i have an issue with this as well. got it on vag com at the week end and got 17863 and 17864 which are both issues with the EGT. i have a few little issue with boosting etc and the guy said it would eb down to the sensor being knackered. i am phoning the AA today to see if they will do it under my warranty.....which they should. they guy at the garage said that alot of the time the sensor and the housing are just full of and need a clean out so t might be worth doing this before you buy one.

i have had a boost issue recently, still have it too a smaller extent so like you say, wonder if this could be the issue.

I've seen where this thing is located, looks like it could be a pain in the hoop to check , suppose it could save £150 though, even if it's two trips to the garage

i phoned the AA and surprise surprise they have said it isnt covered. seat have said that the new sensor for an LCR is £250 and will need two hours labour to fit!!!!

i have my car in for a service on thursday and they have said that they will look into it then for me and see if it just needs a clean or what ever.

just emailed rob at the parts desk at LC Charles Seat in Crewe, £135 + VAT . How the hell do different dealerships vary their prices so much,

sorry mate, i just gave him my chassis number and he emailed back the price, . Labour, not sure how long that would be, does appear that it could be fiddly, you can see the metal braided hose that comes from the actuator area, down the middle of the bay to what appears to be the underside of the inlet but two hours maybe excessive, with a ramp, tools and the know how i'd say an hour'ish.

i have just dropped it off and am going back to pick it up at about 12. they are runing a full VAG com on it as they will have a look around as in his worlds "it is VERY rare for the EGT sensors to go on the Leons".

so we will see what he says. as soon as it is back i will let you know what he said.

right, ive just had "THE CALL" from the garage. they have said that it is the exhaust temprature sender which is mounted on the turbo. he told me that it is £397+ VAT to supply and fit a new one......

what a Fg rip off £456.55 to fit a new sensor......

and dealers wonder why people don't come back to them.

so after him telling me that these never go......it has and so has yours by the sounds of it. i have phoned a friend who owns a garage and i will see what price he comes back with.

must admit, i was under the impression it must be quite an uncommon issue as Dave at Sere didn't think he had sold one before.

I'm still unsure whether to get one because i'm sure that Golfs don't have them and don't have an issue Don't want to cause more damage in the long run though for sake of £150

i just went to collect my car and while i was there i asked for a quote from one of the othere guys at the garage and he has given me a written quote of £326 inc VAT......

what a load of crap...talk about trying to mug customers off.....

ill wait and see what my other garage comes back with. im deffinatly gonna get it done as it is effecting the car.
