Cupra gear stick travel

So I went to have a look at a 16v cupra gti in fareham today, the car was pretty spot on apart from the amount of travel in the gear stick and the vagueness of the gear changes. Didn't know whether this was a common thing or if the gearbox or linkages needs doing?

Thanks guys

you're used to your 1.4 having a nice mechanical rod shift, the 02A in the 16v is vague at best.

if you want a 2nd opinion I'm happy to help...

Yeah, some of the cable change boxes aren't the best!!
I drove one like that. it was soo vague it was unbelievable, think it can be solved from adjusting the cables

Check the linkages. They will go through a period of wear and then reach a point where selecting gears is very difficult or impossible. Easy change is to remove OE knob and replace with something like a Rickbrook one, which effectively shortens the length of the gearstick.

I found on the throw weight on top of the gearbox, (looks like a black golf club)... If you loosen off the bolt there's some play on it to adjust slightly. Had a problem with getting into second for ages and then one day it was stuck in 3rd outside my missus house.

Looked under the bonnet and the nut came loose  Started to tighten it up and then noticed you can slighly adjust it back and fore, after 40mins of playing about I found the gear changes much better!

Plus a B&M short shift does wonders, reduced the throw by 40%

I thought about cutting my lever down, and then re-tapping it to put the nob back on - never had the conviction to do it
