Your profile says you have an FR, if you do, you're mad to put on budget tyres.

Even a decent set of tyres will struggle with the weight of the TDI front end, let alone the power/torque on anything other than a perfectly straight/dry road.

Best tyres I've found so far (and I go through a lot doing 30k a year with a front end wearing through in around 12k) is Kumho Ecsta Sport KU31 Extra Load.

They'll cost under £60 fitted each, so you'll only get 2 in your budget but anything less is a false economy as it'll possibly end you up in a kerb/ditch and definately last less long. Each time you change the tyres there's a risk of damage to the wheel (whcih you've paid so much for) during the removal/fitting process so you want to minimise that risk.

For that size of tyre and type of car why bother choosing budgets. Remember its those 4 bits of rubber that has the only contact with the road. However people on here recommend Kumho KU31, Toyo T1-R, or Falkan 452's which are quite cheap.

If you had a lower powered car on say 14s then it wouldn't matter that much. The last tyres I bought for my previous car, I got 2 for £50. :-o It's the only time I can cay 12 inches is too small.

I got Sumo Firenza ST-08 in 205/45/16 for £198 fitted for 4.

Theyre great in the dry, a bit crap in the wet but I dont push it then anyway.

I don't think the words "best" and "budget" should really appear in the same sentence! Maybe "ditch-finder" is a better word. Like most things, you get what you pay for, so if you are looking at cheapo tyres then the quality is going to be crap. When you think about it, the only bit of your car that actually touches the road is the small footprint of each tyre. In the dry they will probably perform about the same, but when its cold or wet then budget rubber really stands out from the quality stuff. Just be careful! Blackcicles is a quality website to look at for tyres...

Agreed Toyo you wont go wrong with. Just got my second pair for the front on my tdi sport 130 which has a custom code phase 1 map and they do a really good job. Im using the proxes 4's. got them for 70 quid each. If you want cheaper then go with the kumho ecsta ku31. Can get them for 55 quid if you look around.

I've got the parada spec-2s on the front of mine. Not great in the wet but brilliant in the dry.

If I was going budget though I'd always get Falken over Kumho. I've heard good things about the 452s on various forums.
