My first engine mod = FIRE!

Finally my CAI from ebay arrived

So decided to fit it last night, cracked on with it cutting this and that eventually got it to fit (Jesus that was a tough one)

Pretty sure its all connected up so with a slight grin on my face go to start it up and ok starts up fine, turn it off go to double check everything all seems ok to fire it up again... this is when the trouble starts

Thought would give it a few pokes on the gas to see how it responds and a nice little grunt, then look back up and notice the EML light is on and a familiar misfire sound (Coil pack died 2 weeks ago)

Think **** FFS! not again, so I go round to the engine bay to double check and it starts to run fine then a nasty burning smell starts to fill the air and see a little flame and smoke coming from the coil pack I happened to change 2 weeks ago

I run round to turn off the ignition but the car counts out before I get there and my headlights start to flicker, finally got the key out and removed the coilpack.

so my fire major mod = not such a good start!

When fitting the CAI I removed the battery completely and also when putting it back i moved the brown earth over the otherside and the battery earth that was connected with this earth I taped up as was smack bang in the way.

My question is, has a coilpack ever gone up on anyone and would me have removing the battery and shifting the earths around caused this NEW coilpack to catch fire.

I am going to add a 0 gauge earth to the -VE terminal tonight (like you would when doing TB3) after I get the new coilpack to make sure the battery is still earthing proerly.

No that much luckily, the car cutting out stopped the flame

That brown liquid was on fire, Spoke with my stepdad and he said thats whats inside of the coilpack

Going to the Lloyds I got the coilpack from at 4 to get a new one and complain lol

yeh its a common fault mate ive seen loads of coil packs catching fire/melting mate and alot worse than that....it even happens to bentleys as they run similar coil packs

Glad im not the only one, was starting to worry my electrics where causing the fault.

Managed to get the part replaced with a newer model of the coilpack

Turned out it was the earth, I had put it all back together but for some reason it wasn't earthing properly which think caused the problem.

All sorted now and jsut waiting for my jetex filter to arrive and try to fit it lol

Also my 007p sounds stupidly loud now! Can't even begin to imagine what the turbosmart one will sound like when eventually get that.

Bit of an update on this, rather than starting a new thread...

The coilpack issue was caused by a bad earth which I thought I had earthed properly but hadn't so was causing a surge and hence FIRE!

Finally got the CAi fitted at the weekend, can say im pretty 50/50 with it at the moment...

What you all think?

Ebay jobbie with heat reflecting tape and the jetex FR-03007 filter

the heat taoe works suprisingly well, after a 30minute hard drive popped the bonnet to find the area covered in tape to be cold to the touch!

Think only a good trip 2 hour to bournemouth will show how it truely stands up

Dry charger sock should be here in a week and can fit that as well as a cold air feed from the grill
