Found this the other day, In stock at TSR apparently at 650quid! Looks nice, the young lad didn't have much to say about it though, no power gains or anything they said they have a customer running round with one on at the moment. What you guys think? I think under bonnet temps could be an issue?

How can we tell if it's any good though Bill? I've read a lot about welding and cracks but will this be so much of and issue on a "small" turbo?

Good price you think?

nice find indeed, but heat would be an issue

also the charge pipe is custom for that manifold for it to fit onto the turbo

extreme heat & stress is what causes cracks, along with fabrication shortcomings from whoever makes it.. manifold looks like it will flow more than any k04 exhaust housing/turbine could mustre. no idea on this one quality or manufacturer.

looks supersize tubed from the pictures

is it k04 tho?

outlet pipe looks huge

interesting

Not a very pretty piece of work though. Jbs when they did their equal length manifold stated an increase 0f 30bhp which is a huge gain. So if it does the same then great, its just quite in your face.

No, the hybrid was not a JBS one but imported from the states the same as mine. I'm quite open minded as to the potential gains from a high flow k04 manifold as its pretty much unchartered territory. i don't think its unrealistic to get 20bhp from a mani feeding a k04 hybrid. But £650 for a k04 is alot of dosh.
Did the price include Vat.

not doubting the power gains a good mani can make at all mate:)

given the work involved in fabricating a manifold, i cant see a quality manifold being made for less money... unless its uber shiney and chinese of course ;)

sit a k04 manifold next to a k03 one, the runners are way smaller and tortuous on the k04 one, despite its higher power rating. i am sure there's power to be had. $64,000 question will be what ££ are people prepared to pay for 20-30bhp potential gain on a k04 car.

that will be the decider i think

I personally quite like the look of it even if there is only a K04 hangin off the end of it. Would look lovely in my MK2 :)

After I saw this I rang JBS to see if there cast manifold was ready but they were waiting for the first pre production ones to turn up for testing then it would be another couple of months after that.

I think people would pay a reasonable amount for one. I would if I knew I was gointo gain. A good mainfold and a hybrid has to be a a very driveable setup still without the cost of going "big" turbo?

I assume this is the cheap ones you speak of?

Apparently does fit the 023 series turbo's

why is it so cheep? looks good! how cant you tell good from bad?

when ever you see a shiny cheap mani on ebay, avoid it. They are cheap for a reason, despite the fact they may look nice, they are poorly welded and poor quality materials are used

similar to the cheap and nasty kkk turbo's you see on there, as they are chinese replicas and will go bang!

buy cheap, buy twice

It says it will fit an audi 180 tt which runs a k03 turbo which is completly different to the
k04-23 turbos.

I've spoken to TSR about thier manifold this morning and discovered the following:-

£650 inc VAT P&P £12
10bhp gains with reduction in egt's. (this was in a golf)
£150 for ceramic coated option.
1 year warranty
1 inch internal runner diameter
Food grade stainless steel.
gas purged welds :)shrug:)
Fitting at TSR will be a coulpe of hundred including custom charge pipe.
Stock charge pipe cannot be reused but turbo is in stock position and reuses existing downpipe and TIP.
What do you think Bill based on that sketchy spec.
Chap who i spoke to has run one without issues for 18months.

Gas purged is when the gas is run inside the tube to pull the weld nicely all the way through. Reduces weal spots in the weld and it looks tasty!

You can see the charge pipe needs altering as the pipe runners rise up high in the pictures. the picture on the golf passes the pipe down the back of the engine like they do, LCR's dont route that way as std, so routing the outlet slightly fwd would be the probably way.
1" internal runner diameter does'nt look like whats on the pictures tho.. Port exits are 32mm from memory, so 25mm internal ID is quite a lot smaller than the port..

What wall thickness material are they using?
back purge is essential 'good practice' to ensure defect free TIG weld with full penetration and no carbonising

I would most certainly go for ceramic coating tho, given that radiant heat that will come off those runners will nuke anything meltable in sight.

made to order or stocked ? do you know?

Gas purging is not used in the oil industry when TIG welding pipes that will take in excess of 15,000 PSI.
These are pressure tested though.
A good welder without gas purging is better than a bad welder with;)
