Double sided tape on front brake pads?

Just put some new pads on and they've got double sided tape on the outboard pads.

Is that just to ease assembly so the pads don't keep "falling off" into the disk when putting the caliper on, or is there supposed to be a shim stuck to the back?

These are Mintex S3/Leon/TT pads fwiw.

Also, I'm stunned that the car hasn got low pad warning on either (any) side, I think thats pretty criminal. I've never had a car which didn't have it on both sides, let alone not at all.

The double sided tape stuff is anti-squeal material and is, as you have worked out, meant to have its outer covering removed so that the outboard pad sticks to the fist of the calliper and so reduce/remove squealing.

You'd probably need to move up to VW to get pad wear warning system built in - my wife's Polo 9N has it! Seat make some savings to help your wallet along, brake wear warning obviously does not appeal to many potential Seat Ibiza buyers - Seat would have carried out customer research to test the water on this feature!

I just keep an eye on my pads by having a quick look through the alloys everynow and again. More reliable than the pad wear sensors aswell.


True, the wear indicators are really only for "very busy" people - that translates into some thing else, I'd reckon! Oh and the chances of the wiring still being intact are a bit remote as the car gets older and gets worked on by dealers - (this I do know, as my 2000MY B5 Passat had new front bearings and chopped up N/S wear wiring FOC!).
