fuel light

well today the Ibiza went on its first long trip, a 440-round trip to London and back.

basically, with bout 40 miles left on the way back, the fuel range was showing "0 miles" and the fuel light came on about 10 mins before that.

it made it home but i was wondering how much fuel is actually left in the tank when the fuel light comes on?

The fuel light is very cautious and goes off very early. As far as mileage goes I have stretched it 50 miles from the time the light came on until I filled up! This is not advised however... as you may run out of fuel so don't push it! The tank is 45 litres but then I have managed to fit 53 litres of fuel in it.... good ol' SEATs.

yeh comes on stupidly early, think it says in the handbook how much is left after but remember working out you can do 70 miles roughly (obviously depending on how economically you drive) Dunno why it comes on with so much left.

A little bit sad I know but I keep a spreadsheet for my fuel costs and it works out true miles per gallon etc. I added a line to calculate what my total miles left in the tank would be (based on 45l fill up) and that tanks MPG rate and from it I reckon the light comes on with around 65-75 miles left.

I tend to fill up just as the fuel warning is about to go off to prevent the heart stopping beep scenario!

The "beep".... I find it like a contradicting health and safety blunder, it comes on *just* under a 1/4 tank which is over cautious but the sound it makes shatters glass and calls dogs for miles around!

IMO - No need for the sound effects, the light is plenty, doesn't need both, how did the world manage before! ?

^^ I drive Glasgow-Edinburgh every day if the light comes on before harthill services I always fill there in my Cupra I was always over-cautious, if you guys say ~60mi on the light then I might not bother anymore. It's 45mi each way!

I think the gague just isn't very accurate. The trip computer shows 20 miles remaining when mine comes on. If that was really *just* under a 1/4 tank, then a full tank would be a little over 80 miles which is nowhere near accurate (even for a 1.8T ).

what ever makes that light come on and that scary beep isnt set up right atall my light and beep can happen on a hill sometimes then goes off when you go along a flat if you have just the right amount of fuel to do it. so you end up seeing the light and hearing the beep twice.

Yea it's the fuel sender, if the car isn't level for a set period then it will give a false reading.

When mine comes on it is pretty early, I can get around 40 miles after it comes on if i'm cheeky. i wonder if you can turn off the beep with vagcom

yeah the "omg i'm running out of fuel!" beep seems to come on between just under 1/4 to 1/8 tank. Nearly jumped out of my seat the first time it when off!

I think that you will find its set for 3 or 5 litres left in tank (forgotten) - overfilling the tank on petrol cars is not advised as it can cause liquid fuel to end up in the "fumes canister and recovery system", which, according to some real VAG techs, can cost a bit of money to fix when this system fails - but I do tend to over fill now and again - while hoping to stay lucky!

Am I missing something the light is there to warn you not for you to drive until it comes on then fill up. Surely its a much better practice to know you have enough fuel for your journey and avoid any possable mishaps.

Not that bad though if it is 70 miles worth when it comes on, okay to be safe and with different driving conditions 40 miles left. My journey to where I used to work was not even half that, I know I can drive to work with the fuel light on very very easily.

Here is an outrageous statement:- fuel filling stations are placed a maximum of ??.??Km apart on continental highways, when the light comes on you MUST stop at the next one or risk breaking down on the road. Re-fuelling in time always beats this way of thinking though!

Well I drive only 10 mins to work past a garage on the way so meh!
When I used to commute further I drove past 5 garages

Yeh as it's usually after you have got up and going to work
