Leon or Audi A3

No, not some tale of a traffic light Grand Prix, but a question:

I test drove a Leon 2.0TD Stylance and an Audi A3 2.0TD 140bhp today, both with the DSG-box. The Audi felt quicker, and the pickup of the gearbox from idle was definitely smoother.

Is it the same engine and/or gearbox in both? If not, have they done something to the Audi?

Depending on the year its the same engine and I don't think there is much difference in the DSG boxes either. Could be subtle things that make the Audi a bit quicker.

Depends on the model of the A3. If its one of the new ones then yes.

You're right. I test drove a Dec '08 Audi which, I've just read in the brochure, has the common rail diesel engine. So, it might be worth waiting for it in the Leon.
