Cambelt

Alrite lads, got a letter through the door today about my Cupra needing a Cambelt change (std stealership letter), saying that its needs renewal. I know its every 4 years or so but my cars only done 30,000 miles, any advice on whether i should change it a.s.a.p or not?? I was thinking bout having it done at the end of the year anyway but im kinda worrid now lol.

Check it over, if it's cracking, get it changed.

I think that it'll degrade the same amount over time, regardless of mileage (within reason)

Cambelts don't always show signs of degradation.

You should really think about getting it replaced soon. It may cost a fair bit to have it replaced, but it's a lot cheaper than a engine rebuild if it did snap! Plus you'll have the piece of mind that you're not playing the cambelt lottery anymore..

Apparently the life of a cam belt is reduced when you're sat in traffic a lot. Also if you do a lot of small journeys. I would get it done just so you don't have an expensive engine rebuild. Not only that, it has got a 4 year life as it breaks down over time.

Get it done mate, I got mine done at 4 years and had only done 26,000 miles. It's not just the belt...it's the tensioners, idler pulleys and water pump and you don't want any of them to fail!

Cheers lads, i have been quoted 295.00 inc vat from the stealers, a special offer apparently? Needs a service too so gonna cost me 500 all together (ouch). Could anyone recommended another VAG specialist in the area who may do this cheaper??

I had mine done at Midland VW norton canes, I think i payed around £350-400 for 50,000 mile service, cambelt change and new water pump.

Agree with above, not got a cupra but got mine done a few months ago and I have done 38k on a 54 plate, and what about alright ladies as well as lads?!

That's a coincidence. I received the mailer too and got a quote from my local dealer for £295, including a special offer of a free wash and vacuum, courtesy car, vehicle health check and identification and completion of any manufacturer safety actions. I am getting it done next week as I have been pretty satisfied with the service I have had from them so far. My car is coming up to 40,000 miles and five years old. I believe it originally used to be five years for the cam belt change.

Ha ha, you will probably also get a trade-in price on it as well, smart marketing!

But at 4 years or 60,000 miles, this job really needs doing anyway FULL STOP (the cambelt kit etc I mean not the trade-in!!)

i can second midland vw - cheaper than the stealer. had mine changed at 60k @ 5yrs. also had the water pump done as i didnt know at the time if i should or not. and worse i dont know if they fitted a plastic or metal one.
