Well initially people styled these to keep within the euro look. Having the german style plates and surrounds etc. Partly the reason I'm doing it, and rather than get pulled over and getting cautioned/fined and having to take them off thought i'd get myself some legal ones as they now do them...Plus I like the cleaner look of them too. Hopefully getting some spanish Seat surrounds too.

what are people attachingthese with?

You can buy special sticky pads to attach them on, or if you get the surrounds you screw the surrounds on to stop people stealing them. You need a little plastic key to unlock them from the surrounds.

Yeah i think they are legal, but only on classic cars pre 1975 i think...but dont quote me on that...I'm sure someone will correct me! My friend manages to get away with them on his old mini though.

you don't actually need a key, you can just pull them off..
i have a pair as i bought the car in germany. i noticed the 2 holes, but i didn't realise they were for a key

metal plates are fine as long as they are the correct font and spacing, the black ones are technically illegal unless on cars first registered before 1975. however, the police will have to be having a really slow day to pull you for it :p

I was thinking of getting some "show" plates from platemyride.com, dubmeisters German affiliate, in German font but I know i'll get pulled over for them.

On Dubmeisters website, on the plate maker section, it has a check box for "short plate". Anyone have any ideas what the measurements of this will be?

am also considering getting some pressed plates..i know theyve been discussed, but with those holders...does the holder screw onto you bumper, then you simply clip the plate to it?
thanks, ad!

They are legal but only if you get them pressed in UK font and without any stadt stickers on them.

I prefer the German font myself but I am not sure how easy you'd get away with it with the police/mot and I think having a UK reg with stadt stickers might be pushing it a bit?

Jay, my cus from Somerset had proper Deutche style plates on his Mk2 Golf Gti. Even with his uk number plate. Looked good, but now due to the new Reg numbers, may look a bit crampted.

I have some pressed plates with German Font. Had them on my old golf and they looked good, but somehow the german font just looks wrong on the leon. I never got pulled for the german fonts but didnt have the stadt stickers on. I didnt want my pressed plates on sticky pads as people have been able to pull the metal plates off the sticky pads without snapping the plates - the sticky pad is designed for the plastic, or at least was in that case. Screws look rubbish when you've just bought brand new plates. The plastics surrounds look the best but as said can be opened without the key. I screwed it in the end although didnt really want too.

P.S my plates are legal material but illegal font. However, I bought them from the plate man through ebay, as show plates. It means I didnt have to show any docs and got them cheaper than through the normal plate man site because they were through ebay. There's nothing stopping you buying perfectly legal plates as 'show plates' and do the same as I did.
